Passed peacefully away at home on July 2, Joan Andrews, in her 92nd year, under the loving care of her large devoted family.
Dorothy Joan Andrews (nee Snow) was born to Ethel (nee Gilbert) and Victor Snow on July 28, 1928. She grew up on the streets of old St. John’s in a family of limited means but lots of love. She attended Centenary Hall, winding through the hills and alleyways with her older sister and best friend Louise. Joan’s childhood included picnics in Bowring Park, train rides to Ocean Pond, and attending Girl Guides with Louise in uniforms hand made by their sister Annie from dyed flour bags. Joan was lucky in life and love as she once survived a sliding trip down Springdale Street that finished with Joan passing through the legs of a horse standing at the bottom of the hill. Joan excelled in school, winning several awards, finishing grade 11 at Curtis Academy. She later went on to graduate from the General Hospital School of Nursing, Class of 1949B. It was after graduating from Curtis Academy and before starting nursing school that she met the love of her life, Clifford K. Andrews through the Curtis alumni and teachers badminton club. They were married in 1949 and began to raise their family of seven talented and independent children. Joan devoted the rest of her life to providing a stable and supportive home to her children and Clifford. Extended family members, Clifford’s associates, neighbourhood children, the friends, boyfriends, and girlfriends of their offspring, and later the spouses, grandchildren, and great grandchildren all received the same warm welcome in the home on Grenfell Avenue that Joan and Clifford shared for nearly 70 years. That welcoming environment was reproduced in their summer home in Wesleyville where Joan and Clifford spent many summers, preserving the old homestead, creating a beautiful lush garden, literally out of the rocks, and welcoming family and visitors from near and far with a cup of tea and a raisin tea bun or if you were lucky, a meal of pan fried cod.
Joan was predeceased by her beloved husband Clifford (d. 2013). Her legacy will survive through her children: Paul (wife Brenda, grandchildren Christopher and Lauren); Jeanette (partner Jeff King, grandson Michael Andrews); Linda (partner Blake Cryderman, granddaughter Denise Cornick and great granddaughter Maya O’Leary and grandson Alex Cornick, wife Julie King, great grandchildren Max and Sam Cornick and Jayden King); Dianne (husband Lorne Boone and grandson Lyndon); Peter (wife Celeste, grandsons Benjamin, Timothy, and Liam); Sylvia (husband Stephen Bartlett, grandchildren Owen and Evelyn); and Mark (wife Kay). Joan is also survived by her sister Louise Stalder (Peter, d. 2019), her brother Wallace Snow (Marie), sister-in-law June Snow, and many nieces and nephews who all have their own special memories of Aunt Joan. Joan’s siblings that predeceased her are: Minnie Fowler (Art), Annie Dawe (Charles), Fred Snow (Marjorie), Walter Snow, and Don Snow.
A family memorial service will be held from the Carnell Memorial Chapel, 329 Freshwater Road, St. John’s on Wednesday, July 8th at 11:00 AM. Donations in Joan’s memory may be made to the Bowring Park Foundation, a place she loved and spent many happy hours throughout her life. Feel free to share a memory of Joan or leave a message of condolence.
For those who cannot attend the funeral service, it will be livestreamed on Wednesday, July 8th at 11:00 AM. (The link will be posted here.)
