Cynthia Filimowski Thursday December 10th 2020

We are saddened to announce the passing of Cynthia Filimowski on Thursday, December 10, 2020 at the age of 87. She passed quietly in her sleep and thankfully is now at peace.
Predeceased by her husband of 54 years, Karol, Cynthia leaves behind her son Mark (Melissa) and daughter Lisa (Dale), along with her grandchildren Corey, Jessica (Dene), Matthew (Gen), Adrianna, Aria (Aidan) and Chantee (Alex) and great grandchildren Jasper, Ruairi, Tadhg, and Zelda. She will be missed by her extended family, Cassandra, Jules and Joan and the L-Rocks across the street at our family dinners. We know there are many other friends with fond memories of our mother Cynthia. She will always be loved.
Cynthia was born in Manchester and despite growing up during WWII she developed a resilient spirit and compassion that shone through to her final days. After graduating high school she started in a trade, as was the norm in the day, at Reynolds learning how to read and work with blueprints and engineering drawings which would serve her well in the future.
She loved to dance! And it was on the dance floor that she met her partner for life, Karol. If you ever had a chance to see them dance together when they were younger, it was as if their feet barely touched the floor – they took my sister and I to see the Glenn Miller Orchestra at one of the old ballrooms in Manchester in the mid 60’s – we could not believe it was our parents!
In 1967 Cynthia and Karol made the life changing decision to move the family to Canada arriving in Winnipeg in late August and settling into Fort Garry a year later. Mum found lasting careers at CAE and Flyer Industries as a technical librarian. It was here that she regularly invited the “new” people from work that had moved to Canada to our house for dinner to help make them feel at home. To this day, many of those people are still our friends even though they are scattered around the world. Mum and Dad treasured this new land we called home and explored it from coast to coast, proudly showing it off to anyone that would venture here from England. They enjoyed camping and fishing and spent many summers at their trailer at Royal Lake and later at Perch Bay Resort near Keewatin. Mum loved to tend to her garden, stick her nose in a good book, enjoy a good play or concert, get together with friends for lunch and every now and then head off on a bus tour. And of course, staying in touch with her roots by watching Coronation Street and following the Royals!
COVID-19 has forced us to postpone the celebration of Cynthia’s life until later in 2021 – it will be great to see family and friends get together over a glass of sherry (or red wine) to share their warm memories of Mum.
We would like to thank the amazing nurses and support staff on MP2 at Misericordia Place for being Mum’s surrogate family when the pandemic closed the doors to all these facilities. Each one of them shows exceptional compassion for the residents in their care and unending patience with the families that pester them regularly; I will miss our phone calls. We would ask that in lieu of flowers, please send donations in Cynthia’s memory to the Misericordia Health Centre Foundation, 99 Cornish Ave. Winnipeg, MB R3C 1A2 so that they can continue the wonderful care they offer their residents.
