Louisa Marjorie McElligott
May 20, 1933 – December 1, 2019
Marjorie died calmly in Ottawa at the age of 86. She is survived by her children, Laurie and Greg (Alex Pope); her grandchildren Zoë (Dan Ruzycky), Zach and Phoebe; and her great-grandchildren Nicolas, Basil and Teddy.
Born in Dunrobin, Ontario, to Reginald and Louisa Boucher, Marjorie grew up in the Ottawa Valley surrounded by nine siblings – Harvey, Doris, Grace, Lyla, Edith, Elmer, Hilda, Diana and Rick. A star student at Arnprior High School, she moved to Ottawa after graduation and soon met and married Bruce McElligott. Tragically, their married life was cut short by a car accident in 1961, leaving Marjorie to raise two small children on her own while still in her twenties.
After working in the complaints department of Bell Canada, Marjorie moved into the federal public service and eventually retired from a federal security agency as a Communications Officer. Balancing the demands of work and family in the 1960s and 1970s was especially hard for a single parent, as we now appreciate more fully. Marjorie was a lifelong advocate of higher education for her children and grandchildren, and helped open doors for them that had been closed to her.
A Funeral Service will be held at the Garden Chapel of Tubman Funeral Homes, 3440 Richmond Rd, Nepean, on Sunday, December 8th at 2 p.m. Reception to follow.
Interment will occur at 10 a.m. the following day, Monday, December 9th at Pinecrest Cemetery, 2500 Baseline Rd., Ottawa.
