Harold Spencer Coward
July 15, 1921 – November 23, 2019
Peacefully at Northumberland Hills Hospital, on Saturday, November 23, 2019, at the age of 98 with his family by his side. Harold was born in Toronto in 1921. Throughout his youth, he enjoyed playing hockey, where he was League Champion in 1937-1939. In 1939, Harold started his tool & dye apprenticeship with G.E. He joined the Canadian Navy in 1942 where he was in charge of the engine room on many different destroyers. Following a ruptured appendix and the end of the war, Harold married his childhood girlfriend. He was offered the chance to play with the NHL Blackhawks, but chose to focus on his family life. He ran several tool and die shops, including the Avroe.Air. He also trained and raised Labrador retrievers, and started wood carving. Harold joined the Apsley Lions in 1988. After raising four children, he moved to Cobourg in 1995. Harold chaired the Sight First program where he has collected, sorted and packed over 26000 pairs of glasses. Harold has received the Melvin Jones Award, the Helen Kellar Fellowship Award, and the International President’s Certificate. A private service will be held at a later date.
