Geraldine Elizabeth “Gerry” Hilchey (McElhiney)
HILCHEY, Geraldine Elizabeth “Gerry” – 93, of Truro, passed away on November 21, 2019 in the Colchester East Hants Health Centre, Truro. Born in Canning, Kings County, she was the daughter of the late Capt. Gerald Chisholm McElhiney, MC and Josephine Elizabeth (Harris) McElhiney. She was predeceased by her parents; an infant brother, Robert; her husband, John; son, Robert and stepfather, Sheldon Eaton. Gerry grew up in Truro and attended Mount Allison University. For many years she served as Colchester County Deputy Registrar of Deeds. She loved music and excelled in voice – performing in concerts, on radio and as a long-time choir member at St. Andrew’s United Church and First United Church. Gerry was also a member of the Marigold Guild of Needle Arts. Her love of needlepoint and rug hooking is reflected in her work that adorns the homes of the family. She enjoyed her opportunities to travel and sip a glass of wine across North America and Europe. Gerry was active as a volunteer throughout her life, most recently as a member of the Hospital Auxiliary. Her kindness, optimism, and humour touched everyone in her life. Her last four years were happily spent in Parkland Estates in Truro, where she was made to feel at home by a wonderful staff. The family is grateful to everyone at Parkland, as well as the staff at the Colchester East Hants Health Centre, who cared for her over the past three months. Gerry is survived by her brother, John McElhiney, Truro; son, David (Carol) Hilchey, East Chester; grandchildren, Andrew (Lori) and Stephen of Halifax; great- grandchildren, Gavin and Colin of Halifax; stepsister, Cheryl (Rev. Ted) MacDonnell, Midhurst, ON, as well as a host of nieces, nephews, and cousins on all sides of the family. Cremation has taken place. There will be a visitation on Thursday, November 28th from 2 – 4 p.m. in the Colchester Community Funeral Home, 512 Willow St., Truro. Private family interment.
