Anne Hendry Harder Wednesday November 20th 2019

Anne Hendry passed away at the Nokomis Health Centre on November 20, 2019. Anne was predeceased by her husband Jim in 2012. She is lovingly remembered by daughters Janice (Doug), Myrna, Linda (Les) and Heather (Kevin); grandchildren Erin (Allen), Sean (Angela), Colin (Janelle), Eric (Julie), Anna (Wes), Katherine, Graham and Aislinn; 14 great-grandchildren; brother Don; brother-in-law Lorne; sisters-in-law Gladys and Enid; nieces; nephews and friends.
Anne was born near Major, SK, the first of four children born to Peter and Annie Harder. At 16, she left home to work in the Kerrobert Hospital as a nurse’s aide and three years later, she moved to Saskatoon to take the position of maid at the Fred Mendel home. Three months of city living proved to be enough for Anne and in late 1952, she saw an ad for nurse’s aides at the Nokomis Union Hospital. She inquired, was hired, and a week later was on her way to Nokomis.
Upon her arrival, Anne set up her new home in the hospital’s nurses’ living quarters and was soon introduced to a young Jim Hendry by her co-workers. Jim and Anne were married on March 11, 1955 and Anne continued to work at the hospital. When Jim’s dream of farming his own land became a reality, the young couple spent summers on the farm and moved back to town for the winter. In the spring of 1958, after the arrival of electricity, they made the farm their permanent home setting the stage for a life of working hard, side by side, through thick and thin, making time for family and fun along the way.
Anne was an extraordinary baker, maker and doer of many things. She was an avid gardener and loved her yard. She was also a keen curler and enjoyed a round of golf and an evening of bingo. She was involved in the community as a volunteer with many organizations. She loved the annual Fair. As a member of the Nokomis Agricultural Society she was a convener, was the first female president of the society, and was recognized with an Honorary Life Membership in 2003. Anne belonged to the Mount Hope Homemakers (Nokomis Women’s Institute) until it disbanded and for three years held the position of Provincial Home Economics Convener.
Anne moved to the Nokomis Health Centre in September 2014 and while we gradually lost the vibrant lady she once was, to the end she still had her sense of humour. There were many days when a glimpse of the loving wife, mother, grandma, great-grandma and friend we once knew shone through. Rest in peace, Anne.
A Gathering of Remembrance will be held in the summer of 2020.
For those so wishing, a memorial donation to the Nokomis Health Centre Activity Fund (P.O. Box 98) or the Nokomis Ag Society (P.O. Box 483) would be appreciated. For online condolences, tributes or memorial donations please visit www.fotheringham-mcdougall.com
