Obituary of Margaret Harper (Hastie) Smith
It is with gratitude and love that the Smith Family announces the passing of their mother, Margaret Smith, their pillar of strength, at the age of 102. Margaret passed away on Friday, October 4, 2019 at the Sackville Memorial Hospital.
Margaret was born in West-Calder, Polbeth, Scotland on August 10, 1917, the eldest child of the late William Fisher and Elizabeth Stark (Turner) Hastie. Margaret was ten years old when the Hastie family, Scottish settlers, arrived at the Rockland train station in Upper Dorchester on May 11, 1928. Upper Dorchester was home for ninety years.
The Smith homestead in Breau’s Creek is where Margaret and her late husband Jimmy raised their six children; Arthur (Simone), Lloyd, Jean (Leonard Cormier), John, Helen (Eric Thurston) and Charles. Margaret was the loving grandmother to Claude (Jennifer), Christopher (Josee), Nathalie (Jeff), Sophie, Charlene (Fraser), Scott (Angela), Tanya (Phillip) and Shannon (Steven). Great-grandmother to Myriam and Alex Smith, Emilie, Julie and Valerie Vautour, Farrah, Felicia and Marcus Frizzell, Brayden Cormier, Thurston and Waylen Belanger and Macy and Sloan Brown.
She is survived by her three sisters, Betty (late Lloyd Crowe), Ella (late Glen Ripley) and Agnes (late Roderick Read); special cousins, Margaret Hastie and Gladys Hartley of Scotland, as well as by 20 nieces and nephews.
She was pre-deceased by her husband James in 1982; her parents, William and Elizabeth Hastie; her sister, Helen (late Andrew Wright), as well as by her three brothers, Willie (late Doris), Alex (late Betty) and John.
Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to Campbell’s Funeral Home, Sackville (506) 364-8188. Visiting hours will take place the funeral home on Saturday, October 5, 2019 from 2-4 pm. The funeral service will take place at Campbell’s Funeral Home on Sunday, October 6, 2019 at 2 pm with Capt. Rev. Randall Read officiating. The burial will take place in the Upper Dorchester Cemetery at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, donations in memory of Margaret may be made to the Upper Dorchester Cemetery Fund or to the charity of one’s choice.
