Garth Robert Hilderman passed away on September 24, 2019, after suffering a serious stroke.
Garth was born in Yorkton, Saskatchewan on September 27, 1947. He spent his early years on the family farm near Rhein, Saskatchewan. The family later moved to Yorkton and then Saskatoon. He attended Aden Bowman High School in Saskatoon and the University of Saskatchewan, where he obtained a BSc. in Geography.
Garth was a gifted athlete, excelling in all sports, but especially track and cross country running. He was a member of the Saskatoon Track Club and the U of S Huskies. He made many friends during those years and was known for his quirky sense of humor.
Garth was a man of adventure. He travelled to remote parts of the world, where he hiked, climbed, kayaked and explored. While studying archaeology at the U of S, he began working on digs and surveys in the NWT. He built a log cabin on Cli Lake, NWT in the mid 1970’s, and lived there off and on for many years. He worked as a lookout at a fire tower near the North Nahanni River, NWT for many years. He canoed a number of rivers in the NWT, including the Nahanni and Coppermine. He was known as the “bushman” by locals in the area.
Garth had many other interests, including photography, skiing, jazz music, canoeing and mountain biking. He had a lifelong fondness for cats, having up to 9 at one time. They travelled almost everywhere with him. It was jokingly said that his cats had more time in a chopper than some of the pilots!
Garth is survived by his wife, Nancy. They lived in a mountainside house in Kaslo, BC at the time of his passing. He is also survived by his brothers Lloyd and Bill, and their families. He was predeceased by his parents Albert and Lily.
Garth was a man who marched to the beat of his own drummer. He lived the type of life he loved.
There will not be a service.
Our most sincere sympathies to the family and friends of Hilderman Garth Robert..
