Edward Robert Ned Fowler 19232019

Edward Robert “Ned” Fowler
1923-2019
Peacefully, at home, as was
his wish, with the love of his life by his
side.
Ned was born to Victor (Bouse)
and Hattie Fowler on June 12, 1923, at Humphrey’s, New
Brunswick. He often ascribed his toughness and independence to lessons
learned on the playing fields and ponds of
Humphrey’s.
Following his graduation from
Moncton High School, Ned joined the Army which sent him to Mount
Allison University for officer training school. There he played
Varsity Hockey but more importantly met Ruth. They married in June
1949.
The War ended and Ned was
discharged from the Army in 1946. He returned to Moncton and began
studies to become a Chartered Accountant and succeeded in 1952. Never
one to take orders from any but Ruth, he immediately opened his own
practice which he operated for over 45
years.
Active in several sports, Ned
was a member of the 1952 Maritime Senior Softball Championship Team.
His playing days were curtailed by the arrival of his 3
children.
Ned was instrumental in
bringing Little League Baseball to Moncton and served as its First
Commissioner. He was also actively involved in Minor Hockey and Minor
Football in the Greater Moncton area.
Ned was the driving force
behind the formation of the New Brunswick Amateur Hockey Association
(Hockey New Brunswick) and served as its Charter President from
1968-1971.
He was chairman of the Moncton
Recreation Committee, Chairman of the 1975 Intercontinental Cup
Baseball Tournament, and served on the executives of several Sports
and Service Organizations.
He has received awards from
the Province of New Brunswick, the Canadian Amateur Hockey Association
(Hockey Canada), and was awarded the Centennial Medal by the
Government of Canada for valuable service to the nation. He was
inducted into the Moncton Sports Hall of Fame as a builder in 1992 and
is an Honorary Life Member of the Moncton Football
Association.
To Ned, however, his greatest
accomplishment was his family. Ned was proudly a husband, father,
grandfather, and recently a great-grandfather. Family always came
first and was the most important part of his life. Ned and Ruth
cherished their time together in both Moncton and at the cottage in
Pointe-du-Chene.
Ned is survived by his beloved
wife of 70 years Ruth (Fraser), his children James (Shelagh), Scott
(Kathi), and Wendy (Ross), his grandchildren Lucas, Michael (Lisa),
Wally (Christine), Lindsay (Keith), Christie (Nick), Ben (Jahyd) John
(Heather), Maggie (Mark), and Nick (Julia), and his special guy, great
grandson, Gabriel.
At the request of family,
there will be no visitation or service.
Donations in Ned’s
memory may be made to the charity of your choice, PRO-KIDS, or any
youth sport teams or organizations in the Greater Moncton
area.
Arrangements are in entrusted
to Fergusons Funeral Home. 1657 Mountain Road, Moncton
