The Reverend Canon Edward Richard Vaughan

The Reverend Canon Edward’s Obituary
March 28, 1929 – September 9, 2019
It is with profound sadness, gratitude and love that we say farewell to Father Ed Vaughan, who died at home in the arms of his beloved wife Janet, September 9th, 2019. The third son of Daisy (Stone) and Richard Vaughan, formerly of Liverpool, England, he was born in Renfrew, QC and educated at Pembroke Collegiate, ON.
After several years working with Hydro-Quebec and Bristol Mines, he found his true vocation as a priest in the Anglican Church of Canada where, after studies at Bishops University, he served in many capacities for over fifty years in the Dioceses of Quebec, Algoma, Ontario, Nova Scotia and Prince Edward Island.
His spiritual gifts of gentleness, compassion, wisdom, humility and humour brought not only healing but a higher consciousness of the love of God to many in difficult situations. He had a special love for the people of the fishing villages of the Quebec Lower North Shore, where, working with the Department of Education he used his financial skills to enable significant improvements in the area’s schools. In the Lac Saint Jean area of Northern Quebec he ministered to the Inuit suffering TB at the sanatorium hospital at Roberval.
Father Ed’s work in La Tuque, Trois Rivieres, Port Neuf took the form of “Shared Ministries” in ecumenical parishes where he conducted services week-about in the Anglican Church and the United Church. Shortly before his retirement while at the Parish of Emsdale in the Muskoka area of Ontario, he, with Janet and Archbishop Ted Scott, organized a workshop for the indigenous and long-standing residents of the Temiskaming area in Northeastern Ontario. The workshop effectively lessened tensions over territorial issues between the two groups. In his many years of retirement Father Ed did much valuable work in interim ministry in Ontario and Nova Scotia.
Edward leaves to mourn his devoted wife of 31 years, Janet (Kinsman) Parker, stepdaughter Suzy Parker, nieces, grandnieces and grandnephews, also the children and grandchildren of George and Helen Matte with whom he happily lived for several years. He was predeceased by his parents; his brothers Len Vaughan and Leslie Vaughan; his sister Daisy Baker,
Donations commemorating Father Ed’s life-long dedication to Christian service and social justice may be made to Twelve Baskets Food Bank, Nictaux, the Primate’s World Relief and Development Fund (PWRDF.org) and Holy Trinity Anglican Church, Middleton.
A Celebration of Life will be held for Father Ed at Holy Trinity Anglican Church, 45 Main St., Middleton on Monday Sept.16th at 11 a.m. with Father Paul Jennings and Rev. Canon Lynn Uzans officiating.
Janet and Suzy wish to express their heartfelt gratitude to the nurses, paramedics and doctors for their loving care and expertise during the years of Ed’s gradual decline. We are especially grateful for the empathy and love of many dear friends.
