Sister Marilyn Carty (Sister St. Marilyn), a Grey Sister of the Immaculate Conception, Pembroke, ON, died in Pembroke, on the 15th day of September, 2019 in the 66th year of Religious Life. Left to mourn her loss are the members of her Religious Community, her sisters, Sister Diane Carty, gsic, Carol Moran, and her brother, Peter, as well as devoted nieces, nephews, other relatives, and many dear friends. She was predeceased by her parents John Hunter and Isabelle Helen (Sinclair), and her brother, Michael. Sister Marilyn was born a twin, with Diane, in Toronto, on May 29, 1937. She entered the Community on September 7, 1954, pronouncing final vows on August 5, 1959. A teacher by profession, she served in various areas including Victoria Harbour, Pembroke, Ottawa, Kirkland Lake and Whitby. Her final assignment was at Bishop Smith Catholic High School in Pembroke from 1993-2000, after which she officially retired from the school system, having taught for forty-two years, primarily in elementary schools, with the exception of the seven years she was employed as Chaplain at Bishop Smith High School. Other works included preparation of children for sacraments, assistance in the Student Rainbow Program, youth and adult Church choirs, Working Girls Solidarity Program, and telling the story of St. Marguerite d’Youville in Ontario and Vancouver. In retirement, Marilyn was involved in Pastoral Care at Our Lady of Fatima Church, Ottawa, as Eucharistic Minister, and as visitor to seniors. Her final years were lived peacefully at Caritas Residence, Pembroke. Visitation at Caritas Residence, 215 Deacon Street, Pembroke, Wednesday, September 18th from 1:00 – 2:00 p.m., followed by sharing of memories. Funeral Liturgy in the Caritas Residence chapel at 2:30 p.m. Interment in St. Columba Cemetery.
