Teresa Shyu

Passed away peacefully in hospital
on Sunday, August 25, 2019.
Teresa is survived by husband
Larry, daughter Viola, son Philip, step-daughters Helen, Heidi, and
Vivian. Sisters Yee, Hwa, Har, Ling; brother Fuk-hum; cousin Ming; 7
other cousins; 32 nephews and 26 nieces.
Born in Zhanjiang,
China, on March 28, 1935, Teresa moved to Hong Kong with her large
family in 1947. She completed her primary and secondary schools as
well as three years of college education in Hong Kong and Taiwan. She
married husband Larry in 1962 and they moved first to New York in 1964
and then to Fredericton in 1968. She worked for many years in retail
as an inventory clerk before retirement in the 1990s.
Teresa received voice
training as a soprano in Hong Kong, and maintained her interest in
music for the rest of her life. She was a member of the Fredericton
Choral Society for more than 20 years and performed in the choir many
times in Fredericton.
In addition to music,
Teresa was interested in cultural activities. She was one of the
founding members of the Chinese Cultural Association of New Brunswick
in 1977, and always involved herself in various events. Teresa was a
lover of flowers and she maintained a beautiful garden in her yard for
nearly 30 years.
A celebration of
Teresa’s life will be held at Bishop’s Funeral Home, 540 Woodstock
Road on Saturday, August 31, at 2 p.m. Burial will follow the memorial
service and reception. For those who wish, donations may be made to
the Alzheimer’s Society or a charity of
choice.
