Obituary for Maria Logush written by her son, Ruslan Logush
MARIA LOGUSH, 1918 – 2019
My mother, Maria Logush, born on September 14, 1918 in Ukraine, passed away on July 5, 2019 in Montreal, Canada, the city she immigrated to in 1949. She died at the Lakeshore Hospital on the West Island from blood circulation problems.
Maria Logush was well-known as a journalist in the Ukrainian community of North America and for her many contributions to the advancement of the Ukrainian diaspora. She started her career as a radio broadcaster, first in Czechoslovakia in the 1930s (Czech Republic) and later in Canada, in the CBC. Later she became a prolific author of many articles in Ukrainian newspapers and journals on cultural subjects.
As if her constant writing was not enough to keep her content with her life-long ambition, usually from midnight till three o’clock in the morning, she somehow managed to juggle countless additional jobs and interests. Maria was also in the Montreal Ukrainian Literary club, the Montreal Ukrainian art exhibition committee, co-director of the Franco-Ukrainian Cultural Society, and many other Ukrainian organizations. At home, she helped my father in his insurance brokerage business, and cooked lavish dinners for countless friends, as well as writers, artists and political dissidents from Ukraine.
Maria had exceptional charm. Beautiful as a model, she always wore unique outfits made by her dressmaker. Always optimistic, she was kind and excessively generous. Everyone loved her. What was so remarkable is that she never raised her voice in anger at me, at my father or anyone. What a truly special person she was. I will miss her immensely and know that life will never be the same without her love and radiance. She was my sunshine, and will remain so forever.
Ruslan Logush.
