Joy passed away peacefully at the Victoria Hospital in Prince Albert, SK at 83 years of age.
Joycelyn was predeceased by her first husband Kenneth Ross McColl (Ross); parents, Kathleen Barber & Robert Rawlins; stepfather William Barber; brother Don Rawlins.
Joycelyn (Joy) is survived by her dedicated and loving husband Arnold Monsebroten. Joy will forever be remembered by her three children and their families: daughter Kimberly (Vincent ) Marcotte and their children Amanda (Suneil) (children Pritam and Darshan), Melissa (Lyle) (daughters Jacey & Sadie), Eric (Jennifer) (sons Samuel and Jude), Brandon(Jaeden); daughter Gail McColl and her children Jesse, Kyle (children Damien & McKinley), Katie (children Riley & Brooklyn); son Duncan McColl and daughter Stephanie (children Ethan & Kali); Arnold’s children: son Kevin (Doreen) and their children Jamie (Connie), Kimberly (John), Rhonda ( Bryan) (daughter Danielle (Tyler)), Kari ( Clint ) (daughter Jenna ); daughter Kelly (David) Yost and their children Tyler (Christina) (son Rhett), Kathryn (Kenneth) (son George); daughter Pam (Gerald) Waldern and their son Jerry (Pam) (sons Wesley , Justin, & Marcus), daughter Bonnie ( Nathan ) (daughter Grace). Also left to mourn are Joy’s stepbrother Ken Barber, sisters-in-law Jean Rawlins and Eileen Ryland as well as numerous loving extended families.
Joy was born in Cupar, SK on December 15, 1935. Her father died when she was 2 years old and a few years later her mother remarried and they moved to a farm near Edgeley, SK. She loved her new home, her new Dad and made many lifelong friends. She would recall that riding her pony to school in the summer was fun but not so much fun in the winter. In her 20s Joy worked at what was known as the School for the Deaf in Saskatoon, SK. During that time she became proficient in sign language. She continued to use that skill for many years. In July 1960 Joy married Ross McColl and they enjoyed some years with plenty of extended family around. After Ross and Joy moved to Estevan, and as the children could manage on their own, she began working at the Estevan Regional Nursing Home. She did this for a few years until a serious back injury made it necessary to take a few years off. Eventually, she found work with the Marcotte family plumbing business and worked there until she and Ross’s retirement to Emma Lake (“the lake”). A couple of years after Ross’s death, Joy met Arnold and they had some great years together traveling to Yuma for the winter, visits east to see her brother Don and sister-in-law Jean, plus memorable trips to Newfoundland, and Kauai. Many summers were spent at The Lake.
More than anything Joy enjoyed people, young and old. She opened her home to many over the years and was known affectionately as “Gramma Joy” by more than just her “own”.
Joy made the best cinnamon buns anyone has ever eaten. After she could no longer stand to do it herself, she would sit at the counter with Arnold as her assistant and put together a batch for the arrival of loved ones. Every grandchild was at some point shown her technique and allowed to make their own batch.
In the spring of 2018 Joy and Arnold made the move from The Lake into Prince Albert, SK.
With the last few years of failing health, Joy was blessed to have Arnold as her dedicated, loving caregiver and companion and was able to remain at home until a few weeks before her death.
A Memorial Service will be held on Friday, August 23, 2019 at 11: 00 a.m. at Gray’s Funeral Chapel, 575 28th Street West, Prince Albert, SK with Pastor Dennis Serfas officiating. In lieu of other tributes, donations can be made to the Shriners Children’s Hospital, 1004 Decarie Boulevard, Montreal, Quebec H4A 0A9
