Dorothea (“Doris”) Marie Mueller Rolf
July 9, 1934 – August 28, 2019
We are sad to share the news that Doris Rolf has passed away at the age of 85.
Doris was born in Lauenstein, Germany in 1934, and her husband Dieter likes to say “ the first time he saw her, she was still in her baby carriage”. They grew up in the same town, both as only children.
Doris’s first job was working as the postmistress in Lauenstein, before emigrating to Canada in 1955 to join her financé , Dieter, in Kingston, Ontario. They married five days after she arrived, on June 25, 1955. She worked as the housekeeper for a retired General and his wife in Kingston. Here is where she learned English from watching TV, how to cook a traditional holiday turkey, and how to prepare beef “medium-rare” (the General wasn’t fond of the “well-done” approach she had learned in Germany).
Doris and Dieter moved to Trenton, Ontario in February 1960 and in 1968, moved to their family home on Marmora Street where they lived for almost 50 years.
Doris and Dieter had five children – Bill (Susan Mountford), Janet (John Parker), Eileen (Terry Blumenstein), Peter (Alyssa Burkus), and Susan (Dan McComb), and later ten grandchildren (Thomas, Daniel, Caroline, Adam, Sam, Ethan, Emma, Jack, Nate and Luke). They both wanted a large family and took much joy from when everyone was together.
Doris’s kitchen was the hub. Everyone passed through here. When her children were younger, she would cook extra amounts for meals, knowing one or two of their friends would be joining them. Later, her grandkids knew that Oma’s cookie jar was always full, and that there were no limits on the cookies they could have. They loved being in the kitchen with her and were spoiled with chocolate chip cookies, banana muffins and other delicious German treats that she baked often.
Doris was a member of the Beta Sigma Phi sorority and the Trent Valley Quilters Guild.
Doris was always seen with a knitting or sewing project, and she was famous for the colourful, striped socks she made for her children and grandchildren (and any family friends who were lucky enough to receive them). Her passion for quilting came later in life, and she made beautiful quilts that were quilted by hand. This passion became part of her legacy, with two of her children who are quilters today.
Doris and Dieter were married for more than 64 years, and their love was evident in the way they held hands or sat together even in their final weeks together.
Doris will be missed deeply by her husband Dieter, her children and their spouses, her many grandchildren, as well as the Rollwage and Viola families, who are considered part of the Rolf family.
Doris requested a private family service.
