John Alexander (Bill) Smyth, lifetime resident of Banff, passed away at Mineral Springs Hospital on Monday August 19th after a brief illness. He was born in Banff August 13th, 1930.
Bill Smyth married Barbara Clarke of Calgary on October 10th, 1953.
In 1959, after operating Temple View Texaco station in Lake Louise for four years, Bill and Barbara purchased the lodge at Moraine Lake, which they owned and operated for 15 years. In 1966 they bought a second lodge at Emerald Lake, B.C. For several years the two lakes graced the backs of the Canadian $10 and $20 bills.
An avid amateur pilot, Bill Smyth mastered aerobatics and mountain flying techniques and frequently took part in volunteer rescue operations. He was also a mountaineer, cross-country skier and horseman. Bill and Barbara travelled frequently, visiting Europe, Africa, South America and their favorite destination, New Zealand.
Bill Smyth loved the mountains and was dedicated to his home town. He served on the Banff Advisory Council (now the Town Council) from 1975 to 1981, and was elected council president in 1978. He also served on the board of the new Mineral Springs Hospital.
He is predeceased by his parents, Andrew and Betty Smyth, and his brother, David. He is survived by his wife, Barbara, children Bill,
Andy and Kerry. He was above all a proud and loving grandfather
to Nicholas, Laura, Lochlan, Robyn, Kevin, Ryan, Keegan, Tara and great-grandchildren Ellara and Saoirse.
