Obituary of Mary “Lorraine” Rasmussen
RASMUSSEN (MURPHY), Mary Lorraine
Of Halifax, passed away on May 21, 2019 in Parkland at the Gardens at the age of 91. Born January 13, 1928 in Halifax, Lorraine was the daughter of the late Francis and Florence (Hechler) Murphy.
Lorraine was educated at the Convent of the Sacred Heart and graduated from St. Patrick’s Girls’ High School followed by a year at Mount St. Vincent College and a Bachelor of Arts Degree at St. Mary’s University in 1969. Lorraine later moved to Montreal where she taught Business and History at high school. More importantly, she met her future husband, Borge, in Montreal and married him in 1978 in Halifax. She left Montreal to accompany her husband to Argentina where he had been transferred and then to Bolivia. In later years, Lorraine travelled extensively and enjoyed seeing many of the places that she had read about.
Philately was a major interest of Lorraine’s and she won a number of medals for her exhibits at philatelic shows. This led her to extensive research into the life of Henry Hechler, her grandfather.
Lorraine is survived by nieces, Patricia (Bill Gregory) Gould-Thorpe of Windsor and Teresa (Terrance) Sulymko of Toronto; grand-nieces, Joanna (David Tremblay) Gould-Thorpe, Windsor; and their children, Elizabeth and Patrick; Brenda (Don) Pritchard, Dartmouth; and grand-nephew, John Alan (Jeannie Ma) Gould-Thorpe, Langley, B.C. and their son, James. She was predeceased by her husband, Kristian Borge Rasmussen and brother, Henry Murray Fitzgerald.
Arrangements have been entrusted to DeMont Family Funeral Home & Cremation Service, 419 Albert Street, PO Box 981, Windsor, NS B0N 2T0 (902-798-8317). A Funeral Mass will be held at St. Thomas Aquinas Canadian Martyrs Parish, 1725 Oxford Street, Halifax on Tuesday, June 4 at 10 a.m., Father Owen Connolly presiding. Private family interment will follow at Mount Olivet Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, donations in memory of Lorraine may be sent to the Society of Saint Vincent de Paul, PO Box 29051, Halifax, NS B3L 4T8 or to a charity of one’s choice.
