Marnie (Margaret Anne) Johnston October 5, 1937 – May 7, 2019
On May 7, 2019 a life dedicated to love and caring for others peacefully came to an end; Marnie (Margaret Anne) Johnston passed away in the presence of her family at the Pines Long-Term Care Home in Bracebridge. She will be forever missed by daughters Susan (son-in-law Mike and granddaughters Kristen, Lauren, and Isabel) and Mary (son-in-law Florian and grandchildren Oskar, Max, Luisa, and Eli). Donald, her husband of 37 years passed away in 2003. Marnie’s brother, James and his wife Norma live in Brampton.
Marnie was born in Toronto on October 5, 1937. Her parents, Samuel (of Ireland) and Marjorie (of Hamilton) Gaskin lived on Humbercrest Blvd. She attended Runnymede Collegiate Institute. She adored her family cottage on Fairy Lake in Huntsville and spent every summer there. Marnie received her Bachelor of Arts in 1960 from the University of Toronto and she later completed her teaching qualifications for secondary Home Economics. Her first teaching job was in Bracebridge where she met colleague Donald Johnston, they married on June 25, 1966.
Marnie’s life was characterized by always caring for her family and others in the community and this often incorporated the preparation of food. Through her numerous volunteer responsibilities at South Muskoka Memorial Hospital, Bracebridge United Church, the Pines, and local schools she touched the lives of many. She enjoyed summer travels, camping adventures and time at the cottage with her family.
Friends and family are welcome at Reynold’s Funeral home on Friday, May 10 from 5 – 8 p.m. and a memorial service will take place at Bracebridge United Church on Saturday, May 11 at 3:30 pm followed by a reception at the church.
In lieu of flowers, the family would appreciate donations to the Alzheimer’s Society, the Bracebridge United Church or the Pines Long-Term Care Home.
