Mills, Joan Marie (Oliver) – 80, of Oxford, passed away Sunday Dec 16, 2018 in East Cumberland Lodge, Pugwash. Born Oct 07 1938, in Westville Nova Scotia, she was a daughter of the late Roy and Ellen “Nellie” (Myers) Oliver. Joan spent most of her adult life in the town of Oxford where everyone knew her. She worked for many years at the former Gordon’s Greenhouses and later with Davis and Swan IGA, Oxford, from where she retired. As her husband Layton was a veteran Joan was very active with the Oxford Royal Canadian Legion, Branch 36, having served as secretary and also as a member of their Ladies Auxiliary in which she served as president. She was an avid dart player, winning many tournaments over the years. Joan is survived by her sister, Gloria Theriault, Truro; her brother, Leslie (Audrey) Oliver, Kentville; brother in law, Stan Ellis; and sister in law, Dorothy Mills; as well as many nieces and nephews and her special cousin, Phyllis Weaver. Joan was predeceased by her only child, son, Terry in 1986, due to a tragic car accident and her husband, Layton, in 1992.Cremation has taken place under in the care of MacDiarmid’s Funeral Home & Crematorium, 5075 Main Street, Oxford (902-447-2930) where a Celebration of Joan’s life will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, May 4 in MacDiarmid’s Funeral Home & Crematorium, 5075 Main Street, Oxford (902-447-2930). A special thank you to the management and wonderful staff of East Cumberland Lodge for all the loving care Joan received during her stay at the Lodge.
