Garry James “Gibby, Gib” Pierlot
1945-2019
Garry James “Gibby, Gib”
Pierlot –
73, Central New Annan, passed away April 29, 2019, peacefully at home,
“The Mountain”, surrounded in his final weeks by
family, friends and elements of the land that gave him such
joy in life. Gib would have wanted to express a special thank you to
dear friend Barb, exceptional members of the VON and the unwavering
support of wife Mary, together providing great comfort until the end.
Born in Moosomin, Saskatchewan, he was a son of
the late Albert and Florence (Money) Pierlot and was also predeceased
by his older brother, Robert (Bud) Pierlot.
Gib was on the move with his family at just one
year of age, driven by the entrepreneurial spirit and wanderlust of
his father – the wanderlust gene perhaps responsible for
Gib’s later youthful adventuring across the globe. His birth
name was Garry, but he acquired the nickname
“Gibby”, later shortened to “Gib”
as he would become known to future family, friends and colleagues
– all very confusing for his parents and siblings. Gib had
four older brothers and one older sister (Donald, Robert, Yvonne,
Larry, and Lorne), all born within one and a half years of each other
and often referred to as the “first family”. After a
six-year hiatus, Brenda, Gib and
Blaine joined the family over the following eight years, hereinafter
called the “second family”. Gib was a
dreamer, a pacifist and an intelligent introspective guy, with a
strong work ethic and driven to explore the world. He was always
welcomed into the homes of his family between travels, but his worldly
adventures truly became part of the Pierlot family
lore.
In his mid-thirties, Gib settled effortlessly
into family life in two special houses that he
meticulously built, renovated and loved over several decades – one
on the ocean in East Dover and the other as the cabin in the
woods of Central New Annan. He shared these special
years with his wife, Mary Kenny, and as a deeply dedicated,
proud and loving father to their children, Darcy and
Caitlin. There were always the border-collie
companions that remained at his side through thick and
thin. He was honoured to be gifted with four wonderful
grandchildren: Alexandre and Annabelle (Darcy & Carole) and
Ronin and Roarke (Caitlin & Stephen), all of whom gave him
such joy into his final days.
Gib’s spirit, sense of humour and
trademark smile remained with him through several difficult battles
with cancer. He lived every single day to its fullest, and truly
believed in the mantra that happiness is the path. His intense love,
both for family and for the wilderness – the wise owl, the
wild sea, the calming earth and expansive stars – will live
on in the memories we will all cherish.
Honouring his wishes, there will be no visitation
or funeral service.
