Harold Harris Sunday March 31st 2019

We lost a true gentleman on March 31st, 2019. Harold Thomas Harris passed away at the age of 97 at HSN surrounded by family. He is survived by his adoring wife of 72 years, Ruth (Mills). We loved to watch them dance together. He was a hero to his 4 daughters: Bev (Albert Cecutti); Judy (Vignesh Thambiah); Jo Anne (Erin McNamara); and Lori. Special and proud grandpa to Jaya Beange (Glenn Dodds); Darcy McNamara; Kurtis McNamara (Katie); and Kendall Lavigueur; and great grandpa to Zoe and Regan. The son of Frederick and Effie (Genge), Harold had 3 brothers – Joe (Yvonne – deceased; Doreen); and predeceased by John (Louella) and Keith (Cecile). He was a friend to his many nieces and nephews. “Uncle Hank” spent many falls and summers with them hunting and camping. Harold retired from Falconbridge after 37 years as an electrician and maintenance planner. Dad was a proud veteran of the R.C.A.F, serving in World War II from 1942 – 1945. He was a member of the Official Board of All Peoples United Church; his father helped build the church and his mother was the organist for many years. His sense of giving back to his community was evidenced by his actions. He was a coach, referee, umpire and cheerleader to his daughters’ many sports teams. He was a Life Member of the Royal Canadian Legion and served numerous terms as President of Branch 336, having been a member since 1950. He sat for many years on the executive of the Nickel Centre Seniors; and he was a volunteer fireman in Falconbridge, where he earned the nickname “Smoky”. As a councilor for Nickel Center, over an 8-year period he championed the needs of the residents. Harold enjoyed hunting, fishing, curling, camping, travelling and playing Euchre. Dad had razor-sharp wit and will be remembered for his great sense of humour. He had a strong sense of loyalty and determination. He was always an avid Toronto Maple Leafs’ fan, patiently awaiting their next Stanley Cup. Dad’s appetite for crossword puzzles was insatiable. He was still working on the Sudbury Star crossword puzzle during the days before he left us. We admired his beautiful penmanship as we did his meticulous attention to his appearance. He raised us with a love of camping and the outdoors. He would disappear for hours to pick blueberries, right up to the age of 96.
The family would like to give a special thank you to his two best friends at the Walford Residence – John Kraik and Ed Durocher; Josee, R.N. will miss her “blue eyed guy”. The professional, caring support of Drs. Peters, Carlson, Pitre, and Singh, along with the staff of 4 North, made our journey so much easier.
