Harold David (Bud) Marshall
April 10, 1932 – April 9, 2019, almost 87 years
Well-known in the rowing and track and field circles in the ’40s and ’50s, Bud lived his entire life within a few miles of where he grew up on Bulley and Bond Streets, except for one stint in “Canada” right after Newfoundland joined Confederation. A lover of cars and sports, especially The Regatta, Bud regaled relatives and friends with stories of downtown movie theatres, streetcars, the Americans in Bannerman Park, and driving on the left side of the road.
Leaving to remember Bud and his optimistic outlook, sisters-in-law, Theresa and Josephine, nieces and nephews Anne, Gerry, Brian, John, Marie, Pat, Jim, Susan, Scott, Linda, Lesley, Pat, loving nieces and nephews and their families. Caregivers and friends Chris Evans, Chris Moulton, Sandra, Gordie, Gwen, Curtis, Elaine, Jack, Joe, Elizabeth, Janice, Joanne, Bob Chaulk.
In 1963 unforgiving rheumatoid arthritis confined Bud to his bed, turning his muscular, athletic frame into a painful prison. Bud’s resilience in the face of physical hardship was truly remarkable. In 2005, Bud found freedom when Bob Hood designed and custom-built a power wheelchair. After almost 50 years, thanks to that big, bulky chair, Bud was able to revisit the old streets of St. John’s. He could turn on a dime and seldom took a chip of paint off a wall. A special thank you to the staff of Escasoni, 4NB Pleasantview Towers and Dr. Patel for being such decent caregivers.
Predeceased by parents, Ron and Agnes, his brothers, Gerald (Dee), Ronnie, Pat and Bernie, sister-in-law, Mary and best friend, nephew John Furlong.
Visitation at Caul’s LeMarchant Road Thursday, April 11th, 7-9 and Friday, April 12th, 2-5. Cremation has taken place. Funeral at St. Patrick’s Church, Saturday, April 13th at 10 am. No flowers by request. Instead, please remember Bud and practice patience with your own life’s challenges.
