Obituary for Lena Scraba (Shewchuk)
It is with deep sorrow that we announce the passing of Lena Scraba at the age of 95. Lena was blessed with intelligence, a strong will, culinary expertise, faith and generosity. Her family and community benefited from all her talents.
Lena grew up with seven siblings and went to school in the Whitford area. She married Harry Scraba on November 12, 1942 and they lived in the Andrew area. Lena was most at home in her kitchen, her garden and hosting family and friends. She supported many community organizations including serving on the Board of Directors of the Women’s Farmers Union of Alberta for 25 years and also serving on the local Co-op Board. She sang in the local choir, played first base on the softball team, was an avid curler, and taught exercise classes for seniors. She lived in her own home until the age of 87. She then moved to the Andrew Lodge and finally the Benevolence Care Centre in Edmonton. Many thanks to the caregivers who supported her in her later years.
She will be fondly remembered by her two daughters, June (David) Mielnichuk and Bonnie Coskey; her brothers, Nick (Sonia), Roy and Bob (Joanne) Shewchuk; numerous nieces and nephews; numerous extended family and lifelong friends. Predeceased by her husband, Harry Scraba; brothers, Bill, John, and Stevie Shewchuk; sister, Victoria Campbell; her parents Metro and Mary Shewchuk; and her son-in-law, Gary Coskey.
Funeral Service Thursday, January 24 at 10:00 a.m. at Park Memorial Chapel, 9709 – 111 Avenue, Edmonton. Jason Billey officiating with interment in United Church Cemetery, Zawale, AB, south of Andrew at Twp Rd 560 and RR 170 at 2:30 p.m.
