Obituary of Kathleen Walter
Kathleen Elizabeth Walter passed away peacefully on January 18th, 2019 with her family by her side. She was in her 100th year. She is now finally reunited with her husband and love of her life Hilden who passed away 40 years ago. Kathleen was a loving mother to her 3 sons Ron, Tom (Michelle) and Mike (Sandi), and she was the adored grandmother (or Mamie as they so lovingly called her) of Kelly, Nicole and Sean. Mom was born and lived in Owen Sound starting in 1919, which included about 50 years on Seventh Street West, and 9 years at Seasons Retirement Home. Then 3 years ago Mom moved to a nursing home in Brampton, making her location closer to Mike and Tom. Mom was an accomplished pianist who played a range of music from the popular tunes of the big band era to advanced classical pieces. As a young woman she worked on the Tobermory-to -Manitoulin ferry, entertaining passengers for dinner and then for dancing. In the 1970’s Mom dusted off her typing and shorthand credentials to become a supply teacher at WHSS under the affectionate nickname Aunt Claire. She was an avid bridge player (because Dad was!) and later played mostly for the fellowship with her neighbourhood bridge girls and at Baker Street club. She loved a good book, she completed a daily crossword puzzle, and she was not to be disturbed daily at 7 pm for the Wheel of Fortune. As a family we love Sauble Beach, and no one did more than Mom. She was able to keep using her trailer at Carson’s Camp until age 85. After that, she continued Sauble visits with her family, both at Tom’s cottage and during the annual vacation of Mike’s family entourage. Whenever Mom was at Sauble, she never ever failed to watch the sunset. Nothing made Mom happier than spending time with her family. We will always love and remember her. Our family would like to extend a very heartfelt thanks to the staff who provided Mom such wonderful and compassionate care, both at Woodhall Park Care Community Brampton and before that at Season’s Retirement Home in Owen Sound.
