Obituary for
William “Bruce” Ramsay
Dr. W. Bruce Ramsay, DVM, 75
“Don’t cry because it’s over, smile because it happened”…Dr. Seuss. Our Bruce passed away peacefully at home May 11th surrounded by the love of family and friends after a lengthy, courageous struggle with COPD. Bruce is survived by his wife, Susan; daughters, Jennifer (Lance), Robin (Nigel); son, Robert (Lisa); grandchildren, Alexander, Clara, Emerson, Ella and Daphne; brother, David (Lisa); father-in-law, Jack; sister-in-law, Brenda (Drew) and several nieces and nephews. He was a gentle man, as well as a gentleman, filled with compassion for all living things. He will be greatly missed. Bruce was a war baby, born in Louth, UK and emigrated from England to Canada on Jan. 1, 1959, experiencing three New Year’s Eves on the way. After his high school graduation in Calgary, he spent a year TB testing cattle which led to his enrolment at the Ontario Veterinary College in Guelph, Ont. After graduating in 1966 he worked in small animal practices until finding his niche in 1972, teaching and training Animal Health Technologists in a budding new field. He was one of the founding fathers of Veterinary Technology programs at St. Clair College in Windsor, Ont. and NSAC in Truro, NS. He is responsible for the professional, compassionate care that pets experience in many veterinary clinics across Canada. As one former student recently shared, “Dr. Ramsay was my veterinary idol”. Many grateful thanks to the palliative care team: Dr. Henderson, Ann McKim and Lisa Weatherbee, and VON nurses: Margie, Tara, Cassidy, Sarah and Dwayne, and Dr. Rowe – you allowed Bruce to die with dignity among those he loved. Susan would especially like to thank her close nursing friends: Diane, Nellie, Kathy D, May, Kathy W, Alta, Wanda, and the Studiths for always being there. To the many friends who supported our family over the years – Thank you. His wishes were to be cremated and then “throw a party”. A happy- hour celebrating a life well-lived will be held May 18 at 4 pm at 26 Fundy Drive, Truro. Please car pool and bring your favourite Bruce, “Dr. Ramsay” stories. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to 300 Felines, a project initiated by Dal AC AHT students to improve the lives of feral cats, SPCA or charity of your choice. Arrangements have been entrusted to Colchester Community Funeral Home, 512 Willow St, Truro. Online condolences may be sent to the family by visiting: www.ColchesterCommunity.com
