Wayne James Hirtle of Wawota, SK peacefully passed away on Monday, July 16th 2018 at the age of 75. Although diagnosed with cancer in November of 2013, Wayne faced his journey with great courage maintaining a positive outlook to the very end. His faith was strong. It gave him strength. Jehovah God was his guide.
Wayne was born in Winnipeg, Manitoba on April 20th, 1943. He was the eldest son of Olive and Lawrence Hirtle and they lived there together with his younger brother Ken until age 16 when the family moved to Kenosee Lake, Saskatchewan. Wayne completed his schooling at both Kennedy and Wawota Schools. After high school, Wayne began working with his father and brother to assist in running the family business at Kenosee Lake. He married the Gwen Jacklin in May of 1963 and this year made it to the milestone of 55 years with the love of his life. He wooed Gwen with speedy trips from the lake to keep her favourite french fries hot. As louder mufflers were a fad on 50’s cars, she could hear him coming for miles. With the sale of the family business in 1972, he decided to try his hand at farming which he did successfully for the rest of his life. One of the unique pleasures in his farming career was raising elk. Outdoor pursuits were important to Wayne, he enjoyed: hunting, fishing, boating, snowmobiling, admiring cars and, when allowed by Gwen, purchasing classic cars. Clearly his greatest love was spending time with his family. He always enjoyed spending time doing things with his grandsons and encouraged them in many of his outdoor pursuits.
Wayne was a proud long standing member of the Wawota Wildlife Federation. While his son was a teenager he tried his hand at coaching his hockey team. Around the farm, Wayne’s repair shop was always busy with surrounding neighbours as word quickly got out that there there was no puzzle he couldn’t solve when it came to fixing things.
Wayne is survived by his beloved wife Gwen, son Jeff and daughter Wendy and son-in-law Ken Slade along with five grandsons: Shane Hirtle, Jesse Hirtle, Shea Slade, Aidan Slade and Brody Slade. Wayne is predeceased by his mother Olive, father Lawrence and brother Ken.
