Obituary of Vernon Anschuetz
Anschuetz, Captain (Ret) Vernon Bernhard – passed in peace and dignity, surrounded by loved ones, on May 12, 2018 in his 94th year. Cherished husband of 64 years of Dorothea (nee Everatt), father of Bernard, Steven, Sandra and Heidi (Miholics), grandfather of Elizabeth, Andrew and Julian (Miholics), and father-in-law of Suzanne Ansaldo, Michele Fuller, Randy Hessey and Frank Miholics. In passing, Vern was surely met by his parents, Eduard and Elsa, his brother Alfred, sisters Ruth (Gribble) and Charlotte (Barbour), his grandsons Devon and Garrett Miholics and with excited barks and tails wagging vigorously, his much beloved furry companions Sabrina and Silken. Born in Pirmasens, Germany, Vernon (Werner), at the tender age of 7, sailed to Halifax from Bremen, Germany with his older brother Alf and sister Ruth. His father Eduard, an electrician by trade had emigrated to Canada in 1928 to start a new beginning for his family, drove from Collingwood to Halifax in a Willys-Overland Whippet to pick up his three children. Settling in Owen Sound, Vern joined the Upper Lakes Shipping Company as a deckhand in 1952. Vern worked his way through the ranks until he made Captain in 1974. For many years, he was the master of the ULS training ship Wheat King and when he retired in 1987, he was master of the Canadian Olympic. Plying tight shipping lanes and canals, shallow rivers, and monster waves on big lakes like Superior, Vern was well known for his piloting skills, easy-going demeanor, and strict attention to detail. It was the quick action of Vern and his crew on the Canadian Olympic that saved the lives of a family of four when their yacht sank in the Detroit river. It was an on-going joke among his children and wife that Vern could drive a 730-foot vessel better than a car. Upon retirement, Vern easily filled his days sailing his 26-foot sailboat he named Alcyone around the waters of Georgian bay, oil painting, sketching, bird watching, star gazing, weather watching, carving, cross country skiing, hiking the trails around Inglis Falls, Leith and Bognor swamp with Sabrina, then Silken. It was his active lifestyle and passion for nature and creative endeavors that he shared with and passed onto his children and grandchildren.
Visitation will be Wednesday, May 16th, 2018 from 9:00 -11:00 a.m., followed by a Celebration of Life Service at 11:00 a.m. at the BRIAN E.
