Terry Hay of Edmonton

Terry Hay of Edmonton Jan 6 1952 Aug 26 2018

It is with heavy hearts that the family of Terry Hay announces his passing on Sunday,
August 26, 2018 at 11:30 a.m. at the age of 66. Terry held a positive outlook and
optimistic attitude during his courageous battle with pancreatic cancer. He peacefully
passed surrounded by his loving family.
Terry was born on January 6, 1952 in Grande Prairie, Alberta, to Ross and Thelma Hay.
In 1974, Terry married his beloved wife Wilda and moved to Yellowknife in the
Northwest Territories. This is where they began their life of adventures and first few
business ventures, with no worldly possessions. Terry and Wilda later welcomed three
beautiful children: Candace, Melanie and Russell.
From a young age, Terry always demonstrated an entrepreneurial spirit. In 1982, Terry
and Wilda purchased Scandinavian Building Services, which at the time was a small
janitorial company. Through hard work and dedication, Terry made Scandinavian one
of the top janitorial companies in Canada. He used his love for his family and business
to motivate him to work harder every day. His dedication was evident from his
business practices to the individual relationships with each of his staff members whom
he called his ‘Scandi Family’. Scandinavian today encompasses the qualities of its
great leader and CEO, Terry Hay.
Strength, love and passion are the qualities that personify Terry. Every moment spent
with Terry was an adventure, he cherished time with his family. One of the family’s
fondest memories was walking to the park the first day in our new home 30 years ago
in Grandview. It started pouring rain and hail. Terry carried Melanie and Russell while
Wilda grabbed Candace’s hand and all five ran home laughing, thrilled with the new
adventure ahead. Once we arrived home, the power was out. Terry built a fire in the
fireplace, he had come through for us again. We roasted marshmallows by the
candlelight and talked. Terry refused to turn the lights on when the power was restored
so we could keep on enjoying our memorable experience.
If any member of his family ever needed Terry, he would stop everything no matter
where he was. He was our rock and strength in times of trouble and our biggest
cheerleader in times of triumph. Terry enjoyed continuously giving back to the
community, donating to charities and always finding ways to better himself. To his
family he was not only a loving husband and father, but a business partner, mentor and
true best friend. Terry is a legend to many, a man whose strength and wisdom will
never be forgotten.
A Celebration of Life for Terry will be held on Wednesday, September 5 at 11:30 a.m. at
Ellerslie Road Baptist Church (10603 Ellerslie Rd SW, Edmonton, AB T6W 1A1),
immediately followed by a reception at the Royal Mayfair Golf and Country Club (9450
Groat Rd NW, Edmonton, AB T6G 2T5).
