Roger served in the RCAF from 1950 – 1966 retiring as Flight Lieutenant with 435/436 squadron. While stationed in Edmonton in 1952 he met nursing student Anne Smith. They were married in 1954 and began their adventure together – raising 6 children and moving over 20 times. Following his retirement from the service he moved the family to Coronach, Saskatchewan and then settled in Calgary, where he enjoyed a career in the home building and insurance industries. Upon retirement he moved with Anne to Sylvan Lake and spent many happy years travelling and golfing with winters in the Coachella Valley, California. Roger is survived by his wife Anne, sons Donald (MaryJane), Michael, James (Carol), Bradley and Brian Stone, and daughter Anne Stone Johnson (Barry), as well as 18 grandchildren; Lisa (Joe Long), Ben, Allison, Alexander, Daniel, Kyle (Lauren Lemieux), Ryan (Jenna), Colin (Ashlee), Nathan, Amy (Sam Catellier), Logan (Ryan Koudys), Chad (Melissa Henry), Bradley (Lauren), Clare and Will Stone, and Adam (Alexx), Olivia and Julia Johnson, and 8 great-grandchildren; Maddox, Matthew, Jett, Harper, Camden, Myla, Scarlett and Tucker. Roger is also survived by his sister Beryl SSJD, brothers Fred and Mike Stone (Del) as well as brother in law Doug Smith (Claire) and sisters in law Ruth Gramlich, Dorothy Stein (Milton) and Georgina Nordstrom (Richard) and numerous well-loved nieces and nephews and their spouses and children. He was predeceased by his parents Alick and Olive Stone. Roger has passed on to his children and grandchildren a strong work ethic, a love of the outdoors, and his quick wit and dry sense of humour. He loved people and was happiest surrounded by family and friends, in conversation and laughter. He never lost his love of aviation and we know he is flying now, in search of new horizons. Memorial service will be held Friday, May 25, 2018 at 1:30 pm at Hillhurst United Church, 1227 Kensington Close N.W. Calgary. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Salvation Army at secure.salvationarmy.ca/registrant/DonationPage.aspx?eventid=226579.
