Raymond Heartz Brown 2018

Obituary Overview
In Loving Memory
The death of Raymond Heartz Brown, age 91, of South Athol, occurred peacefully on Friday, October 19, 2018 while surrounded by his loving family at the Cumberland Regional Health Care Centre in Upper Nappan.
Born in South Athol, Raymond was a son of the late C.B. and Susan (Fisher) Brown.
Born in the house that he and Ruby called home, Raymond knew every rock and tree on their land that he loved. Side by side, he and Ruby worked their dairy farm while raising a family. For several years he drove a school bus, enjoying the interaction with his young passengers. At age 55, he and Ruby sold the cows and, continuing to work the farm in other ways, were finally able to travel – Europe, California, Eastern Canada and USA, and a cross Canada adventure – wonderful memories of places seen and friends they met in their travels. Many more happy days were spent camping with family and friends.
In his younger years, Raymond competed in local and provincial plowing matches and represented Nova Scotia at several Canadian Championship Plowing Matches in Ontario. As the winner of the last Nova Scotia Provincial Plowing Match, he remains the reigning Nova Scotia Provincial Plowing Champion.
He and Ruby were long time members of the Cumberland Twirlers and the Cumberland Car Club. His 1963 Dodge (original owner), was on display at many local car shows. He was a Life Member of the Southampton Knights of Pythias, served as Elder in the Athol United Church and trustee of the South Athol Elementary School, was a member of the Southampton Male Choir of the 1950’s and a current member of the Southampton United Church.
Raymond’s greatest legacy is the relationship he and Ruby have with their family. No family gathering (and there have been so many over the years) was complete without Gram’s cooking and Gramp being the “biggest toad in the puddle”. A well-loved husband, father, grandfather, and great grandfather – he will be missed by all!
Raymond will be lovingly remembered by his wife of 70 years, Ruby (Chappell); daughters, Marilyn (Lloyd) Munroe, Diane (George) Crawshaw and Wendy Brown (Tony Mattatall) all of Amherst area; beloved grandchildren, Shane Munroe, Kitchener, ON, Kristi (Zaheer) Rahemtulla Toronto, ON, Keelie (Terry) Humphries, Perth, Australia, Thomas Crawshaw (Shannon Wilmot), Ottawa, ON, Daniel Crawshaw, Kelona, BC, Justin Rhindress, Amherst and Megan Rhindress, Halifax; great grandchildren, Maliyah and Kaden Rahemtulla; as well as several nieces, nephews and extended family.
In addition to his parents, Raymond was predeceased by sisters, Georgie Smith, Helen Davison and Susie Thompson; brothers, Winston Brown and Willis Brown.
Visitation will be held on Wednesday, October 24, 2018 from 12:30 pm until funeral service at 2:00 pm all in Campbell’s Funeral Home Chapel, 98 Church St., Amherst (902) 667-9906 with Mrs. K. Ruth Gamble, DLM officiating.
In lieu of floral tributes, memorial contributions in Raymond’s memory can be made to the charity of your choice.
