Peter Pasechnik
July 25, 1938 – December 6, 2018
“Pete the Builder”
Lifelong resident and contractor of Vernon, BC, Pete “The Builder” Pasechnik passed away suddenly but peacefully in the company of his family, December 6, 2018 at Vernon Jubilee Hospital from complications of a short lived battle with cancer. He survived 80 years living in the community he loved and built.
He was born on the family farm located near Swan Lake on July 25, 1938, delivered by a midwife. He was one of 10 children that worked the family farm and started his construction career at the age of 16 in the family business S.J. Pasechnik & Sons Ltd. He went on to be the sole owner/operator of this company that built over 500 homes, churches, schools, fire halls, reservoirs and commercial buildings within and around Vernon and the Valley.
He was particularly proud to have been involved with the construction of the Performing Arts Center.
If you ever had the opportunity to bump into him he probably would share a story or two, or three about his many projects and life experiences.
Pete lived and breathed construction. His office was within his home not just for economic reasons as he firmly believed in studying his projects for hours on end and if “you didn’t study the plans everyday” you weren’t really prepared to build. His memory and mathematical abilities were that of a savant. He could out calculate a calculator on any given day. He was a dog of the old school of tricks but could appreciate new technologies and methods.
Pete appreciated the valley he grew up in and spent every summer at his cabin on Okanagan Lake recharging his batteries and enjoying the lake and all its calm and stormy events. He loved having family and friends around him and sharing his ideas and knowledge with all; hence never retiring or missing a phone call.
He is survived by his wife Mary of 58 years. His daughters: Penny (Rick) Latta and Janey Pasechnik all of Vernon. Grandchildren: Jarrod & Paige Latta, Brothers Paul (Rose) Pasechnik, Vic (Karen) Pasechnik, Sisters Lee (Doug) Whyte, Judy (Jim) Miller, Eve Barton and Lillian McPherson; many nephews and nieces; friends and colleagues.
He is predeceased by his parents Olga and Steve Pasechnik, and his brothers: George, Gus and John Pasechnik.
A service will be held Monday, December 17th, 2018 at 1:30PM
at Grace Bible Church, 5661 Silver Star Road, Vernon, BC
250- 549-3095.
Cremation will precede this event and will be in the care of Dignity Memorial.
The family requests no flowers but to consider making a donation to the Vernon Jubilee Hospital foundation or a Cancer charity of your choice.
