Dr. Peter Francis Harris, aged 86, died peacefully at home with family at his side on June 6, 2018. Predeceased by his brother, Rupert and sister, Barbara (Tony Fry). Left to mourn are his wife and best friend, Joanne (Myrick), sons Chris and wife, Corinne (Bowen) and Jonathan and fiancée, Kaitlin Kozell. He loved and was loved by his Harris ‘Scottish clan’; sister-in-law, Pat (Buist), nephews and nieces, Phil, Michael, Peter, Pam, Tina, Patti, Chris, Suzy and their families; the Fry line, nephew and niece, Mark and Lucy and their families; by his Myrick in-laws, Don, Sharon (Mike), Bill, and Kathi (Jeff), and their families; by his life-long friend and intellectual sparring partner, Brendan Farrow and wife, Danielle; and by our neighbours who’ve become our extended family over the years.
Peter was born and grew up in Mottingham, England, moving to Scotland with his family during the war years. At 14, he went to Mark Cross, a seminary, and completed his B.A. (London). From there he went to Rome and Oxford to complete his doctoral studies. He was award his Doctorate in Theology from the Gregorian University in 1962.
While a Fellow at St. Edmund’s House, Cambridge, he met the head of Memorial’s Philosophy Department who invited him here for a one year teaching appointment. Peter never looked back. He joined the Philosophy Department in 1971 where he taught and also served as department head for 11 years, retiring in 1996. After his retirement, he remained involved with the university community, serving on committees, attending and giving papers at the Philosophy colloquia, mentoring students, publishing articles and participating in Jockey Club, of which he was one of the founding members.
He loved this province and its people. A couple of years ago a cashier in Dominion asked him where he was from. “Pouch Cove.”, he replied. He loved walking on the barrens, gardening, cooking, woodworking (he thought he might come back as a carpenter in his next life), reading and puttering around the house and garden.
He was wise, fair, kind, thoughtful, patient – except in queues and waiting rooms – and always able to see issues and problems from many perspectives. His humour was intelligent and without malice. He was respected by his colleagues, well-liked by his students and his company enjoyed by his family and friends. He was a good man.
Our deeply felt thanks to Dr. Pauline Duke (ret’d), Dr. Russell Dawe, and Agnes Whelan (Family Practice); Drs. Al-Asaaed, McIsaac and Parsons (Dr. H. Bliss Murphy Centre); the staff of 4 North A, including Ms. Bonnie Hobbs; Eastern Health Paramedics and the staff of the HSC Emergency Department, especially Rejean Ashford. Peter was very well looked after by our health care system.
A sincere and heartfelt thank you to all our family and friends, whose love, support, help, total reliability and generosity have been overwhelming and sustaining. You have been our light.
Flowers (which he loved) or a donation to a charity (which he felt important – UNHCR, The Gathering Place or one of your choice) would be gratefully accepted.
At Peter’s request, there will no wake; cremation has taken place.
The funeral Mass will be held at St. Agnes Church, Pouch Cove, at 10:30 a.m., Monday, June 11th.
