Myrtle Anna Herchuk (née Sjorlund)
HERCHUK, Myrtle Anna (née Sjorlund) Hendrickson passed away peacefully at CapitalCare Strathcona on September 29, 2018 at the age of 95. She was born April 24, 1923 to Maximilla (née Armstrong) and Victor Sjorlund on a homestead near Wetaskiwin, AB. Myrtle is survived by her loving daughters Elaine Thiel (Ron) and Charmaine Pitka, her devoted daughter-in-law Kris Hendrickson, her three sisters, Ethel, Pearl and Rosie, her grandchildren Denise (Dale), Leah, Ray-Anne (Jarett), Kris (Jayati), Shauna, Lisa (Vlad), B.J. and Kassie (Oren), 9 great-grandchildren and her loving nieces, nephews and other family and friends. Myrtle is predeceased by her husband Henry Herchuk, her son, Byron Hendrickson, her son-in-law, John Pitka, siblings Lena, Buster, Evelyn, Marnie, Ruth and Vivian and her first husband Carl Hendrickson.
Myrt, “Nan” to her grandkids, loved singing and dancing, digging in her garden and tending her flowers, sitting around a campfire out at the lake with family and friends, watching the loons and other birds, enjoying the sunrise and sunset, laughing, and telling jokes and stories. She was a hard worker, full of vigor and the joy of life. She was a dedicated Eaton’s security officer, walloping would-be shoplifters with her handbag. She raised three children, through sometimes difficult times, but forged in them and their family’s strong bonds of love and commitment and instilled an enduring appreciation of “togetherness” and the importance of both immediate and extended family.
A memorial to celebrate her life will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Monday, October 8, 2018 at Evergreen Memorial Gardens, 16204 Fort Road NW, Edmonton, AB. Interment will follow at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Alzheimer’s Society (or your preferred charity. The family wishes to express their thanks to the staff at CapitalCare for their kindness and care of Myrtle.
