It is with great sadness that the family would like to announce that Mychajlo Wysoczanskyj passed away quietly in his sleep at the age of 90 after being in ill health the last year. He was predeceased by his beloved wife of 51 years Olga (nee:Chaban), and is survived by his two sons Wasyl (Oksana) and Mychajlo (Ulana), grandchildren Zakhar, Laryssa and Marko, his sister Maria who still lives in his hometown of Zaluze, as well as many nephews, nieces, family members and friends in Canada, Ukraine and the US.
Mychajlo lived out his childhood in the village of Zaluze, the place he always considered home. Even in his old age he could vividly recount stories of his childhood with the fondest of memories and exacting detail. To the very end Mychajlo’s love and devotion to his homeland Ukraine was unwavering and defined his being and purpose in life.
In 1944, weeks shy of his 16th birthday, Mychajlo volunteered to join the Ukrainian National Army where like many patriotic nationalists of the time he hoped he could further the cause of Ukrainian independence. This fateful decision would part him with his homeland, never to see his mother or father again. Wounded on the last day of the war, he made his way to Western Europe and was interned in England, before immigrating to Canada in 1954, where he started a new life for himself in Montreal, the city he would call home for the next 63 years. He quickly immersed himself in the Ukrainian community and dedicated himself to work and service in the community. His involvement included but was not limited to: a 25 year career at the Ukrainian National Credit Union, President of the Ukrainian War Veterans Association, Ukrainian National Federation where he served in numerous executive positions, 17 years as treasurer of PLAST Ukrainian Youth Association Montreal, and an active member in the Ukrainian Canadian Committee.
In 1991 soon after the breakup of the USSR,and after 47 years exile, Mychajlo was able to return to his village capping a lifelong dream of being in a free and independent Ukraine. His dedication to the cause and community stand as an example to all those who selflessly work for a greater good.
Family will receive condolences at Alfred Dallaire MEMORIA Funeral Home at 3254 Rue Bellechasse, Montreal. Visitation on Sunday September 23rd from 7.00 pm to 9.00 pm. Panachyda at 7.30 pm.
