Obituary for
Michael John Wallace
Born April 15th 1944, Edgeware, England he died peacefully on November 27th, 2018 in Port Hope, Ontario, in the arms of Daphne, his wife of 35 years. Michael graduated in photography, from Regent Street Polytechnic Institute, London, in 1965. He emigrated to Canada in 1967 and worked in Toronto until opening his own photographic studio in Parkdale in 1983. Moving to Port Hope in 1989, he continued his work as a freelance photographer. He was involved in the design of two books Bowmanville An Architectural and Social History with Diana Grandfield and Art DecoScapes with Gray Abraham which catapulted him into the digital revolution.
Michael worked tirelessly on architectural conservation, with special effort to save and restore the Capitol Theatre in Port Hope. He had a sincere love for this town of Port Hope. He visually recorded historical aspects of the town that has left a treasury of photographs.
Michael was foremost, a passionate photographer, he was fortunate to live doing the thing he loved most in life. He was an eager and curious student about anything and everything, from technology to art to music to car racing.
Michael will be missed by his family and a community of loving dear friends for his kindness, generosity and wonderful sense of humour. This gracious, charming, warm-hearted gentleman was the best kind of friend, always willing to engage with anybody in conversation on any subject. Michael loved people.
Michael is survived by his wife Daphne Wilmot Grandfield and his daughter Millissa Greenwood, her husband Peter and his grandson Zeke, his brother-in-law Clive Grandfield, his wife Andrea Richardson and their children, Charles and Julia, in whom Michael found great hope for the future.
The whole world to Michael was light and shadow….he would always say “look at the light”.
Michael has been cremated and his ashes will be buried in the Wilmot family plot in Newcastle, Ontario. There will be no service but a celebration/wake is planned for early 2019.
In lieu of flowers, donations to the Northumberland Humane Society would be appreciated and may be received at www.rossfunerchapel.com
