Obituary of Mary Nickituk
It is with heavy hearts that we the family announce the passing of Mary Nickituk (96) on November 24, 2018, at Taigh Na Mara.
Born on September 8, 1922, in the Ukraine, she moved to Canada with her family at a young age.
In her early years, she was employed as a kindergarten teacher in New Aberdeen, Glace Bay. Mary loved spending time with the children and in her spare time would prepare food, knitted clothing or anything the children cherished.
She was an active member of St. John the Baptist Church for many years. During that time, she was a member of CWL, involved in many activities in the church, and volunteered much of her time.
Proud of her Ukrainian heritage, she was involved with the Ukrainian church in Sydney. Her passion was always cooking Ukrainian meals and having get-togethers with her family. Mary is survived by her loving daughter, Diane (Nick) Dimitropoulos (Halifax); grandchildren, Diane (Mike) MacIntrye (Glace Bay), Michael (Eleni) Nickituk (Oxford England), Paul (Arlene) Nickituk (Glace Bay), Jennifer Nickituk (Marcus) (Glace Bay; great-grandchildren, Maya, Ethan, Emma, Olivia; brother, Steve Markiw; daughter-in-law, Bernice Nickituk. She is also survived by a niece and nephews. Mary was predeceased by her husband, Mike Nickituk; son, Peter Nickituk; Baby Nickituk; her parents Peter and Anastasia Markiw; her sister, Ann Gouthro. Visitation will be today Monday 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. in Curry’s Funeral Home, 775 Main Street Glace Bay. Funeral service will be celebrated Tuesday 10:30 a.m. in St. Anne’s Church Glace Bay. Reception to follow.
