LaRade, Mary Bernice
August 23, 1925 – December 18, 2018
Surrounded by her family, Bernice passed away peacefully at the age of 93 at home.
She was born and raised in Sampsonville on August 23, 1925, and was the daughter of the late Mary Alice (Fougere) and Ammable (Mabbie) Landry.
Bernice will be remembered as ‘tough as a boiled owl’ a saying she used quite often when describing people. She became a widow at a young age when her husband Joseph LaRade passed away in 1965. She use to enjoy playing TV bingo and nothing made her happier than a few dollars’ worth of pull tab tickets for the chance at big money. For many years she knitted the famous ‘lopi’ sweaters, slippers and mittens that some of us still have kicking around and will cherish now more than ever. At the age of 85 she decided to start travelling and took her first trip all the way to British Columbia to visit grandchildren and great grandchildren which she made an annual tradition for a few years. She wasn’t afraid to tell things like it was or ask for exactly what she wanted especially as she aged and there were many evenings she enjoyed a good drink of whiskey and ginger ale at the kitchen table with family to ‘help her sleep’.
Left to mourn her passing are her family; sons Peter (Catherine), Paul (Diane), and Wade all of Sampsonville, daughter Audrey (Dolphie) Comeau, Yarmouth, Muriel (Allan Sampson), L’Ardoise, Lydia Mombourquette, Sampsonville, Sheila (Jimmy) Clarke and special daughter Mary Clarke with whom she was lucky to have lived with for many years and who lovingly cared for her in their home until her last day, 14 grandchildren, 25 great-grandchildren, who referred to her as “Old Nana” and 2 great-great-grandchildren. She leaves behind her sister Bertha Carter and brother Cecil Landry. She will also be missed by her special childhood friend Shirley Carter.
Besides her husband, she was predeceased by her first child Mary in infancy, daughter Mary Alice ‘Allie’ LaRade who we all know was there to welcome her Momma Bear back to her with open arms, grandson Zachary Saulnier at birth, sister Janet LaRade and brother Ray Landry.
A special thank you from the family goes out to all of the homecare staff and nurses who came and took such great care to make her comfortable during these last few months. A special thanks to Nurse Hillary Oakley who stayed with the family until the very end.
Memorial donations may be made to the St. Peter’s & Area Food Bank Society or the Richmond Villa Activity Department.
