Marjorie Zwicker
1934-2018
We, the family of Marjorie Frances Anne (Marnie) Zwicker (nee
Mailman) of Newcombville, N.S., are saddened to announce her passing
on November 8th, 2018. Born April 26th, 1934, she was the daughter of
Karl and Maude Mailman of Bridgewater, N.S.. Marnie, as she preferred
to be called, (she loathed the name Marjorie and she made sure you
were to address her by Marnie), was a woman that was loved, is missed,
and will always be cherished. Our “Nan,” as she liked to be
called by her grandchildren, was a force to be reckoned with but under
all that blustering there was a huge heart and a free spirit. A
daughter, wife, mom and friend to many, she was like no other could
be. She was smart, strong, stubborn, feisty, spunky, witty, had a
heart of gold with a concrete exterior and definitely did things her
way.
Marnie was an accomplished accountant and church organist.
She was devoted to her career as an accountant and only retired at age
79 after suffering a mild heart attack. She developed complications a
few days after her heart attack and had to have emergency brain
surgery to correct a bleed, and a second brain surgery two weeks
later. Remarkably, she recovered from all of those setbacks, regaining
all of her mobility and faculties better than most people half her age
and took the approach with this as she did everything in life, if you
were going to do something half-assed you may as well not do it at
all. She gave 110% to everything she took on but struggled the last
few years with health issues.
Marnie and Don enjoyed many happy, fun filled years
motorcycling on their Harley Davidson. Their motorcycle friends were
very dear to them and held a special place in their hearts. Feeling a
little confined as a passenger Marnie decided to buy her own
motorcycle and at age 50 she took the motorcycle riders and licensing
course but after a small incident with her motorcycle, she decided
being a passenger wasn’t so bad after all and enjoyed many
more years of motorcycling up until about 8 years ago when her
arthritis limited her from going anymore. She shocked us all by
getting a tattoo on her wrist at age 50 as well. That may have shocked
us a little bit but to those her knew her as a friend and not
“Mom or Nan”, it didn’t surprise them at all, she
was the life of the party they said. She was a straight laced
accountant and church organist but she was also a bit of a rebel who
loved to have fun. Marnie loved her family and grandson’s
Tyler and Matthew Garland were her heart and joy, living close by and
always keeping in contact with her. She thoroughly enjoyed watching
them grow up and was very proud of the fine, accomplished young men
they had become. Marnie also loved animals, she always had a pet in
her life. Her beloved dog and last pet, Suzie, was a constant
companion and when Suzie passed away a couple of years ago, she was
devastated, stating no more pets, it’s too hard to lose
them. Loved ones that cleared the path for Marnie are her
father George Karl Mailman, her mother Ellen Maude Mailman, brother
George Karl “Pidge” Mailman, nephews Gary Mailman, Carroll
Mailman, Kenneth Mailman and son-in-law Captain Howard
Garland. Loved ones that will miss Marnie until they meet
again are her husband Donald Carl Zwicker, daughter, Councillor
Claudette Garland, Sweetland, N.S., Chris (Norm) Knock, Caledonia,
N.S., Cathy (David) White, Sackville, N.S., John (Diana) Zwicker,
Spryfield, N.S., Danny (Valerie) Zwicker, Enfield, N.S.,
grandchildren, Tyler (Cait) Garland, Matthew Garland, Caitlin Zwicker,
Mikaela Zwicker, Aimee Conrad, Jamie White and Corey
Bollivar.
Two days before she passed away, she was
insistent that when her obituary was written it was not to say she
passed away peacefully, she said dying was hell. She did however slip
away quietly. Although quietly was not a word that would
ever have been used to describe her, proving it is true,
there’s a first time for everything. And so the story goes
until we meet again. We love you and miss you. When she walks through
the Pearly Gates they will definitely know she has arrived, although
she insisted she was going where the temperatures were hot,
we’re sure she has a special place in Heaven. At
Marnie’s request there will be no visitation or funeral
service. Cremation has taken place.
In lieu of flowers please make donations to Shaid Animal
Shelter in her name or to the charity of your choice.
