The death of Mabel Viola Hawker occurred at the East Cumberland Lodge, Pugwash, on Tuesday evening, July 10, 2018. Born in Massachusetts, U.S.A. on December 21, 1924, she was the daughter of William and Martha (Tucker) Cameron. The family permanently relocated to Port Howe in 1937. In 1946 she married the love of her life, Fred Hawker, who survives her. They spent most of their married life in New Glasgow. Mabel was the matriarch of the Cameron family and was predeceased by six brothers, George, Ernest (Ernie), Melvin (Mel), William (Bill), her twin Hugh (Hughie), and Robert (Bob). Mabel was a faithful member of the First Baptist Church in New Glasgow, where she was active in the United Baptist Women’s Missionary Society, continuing with the Pugwash Baptist Church. She was a member of the Wisemenettes, where along with Fred, they worked tirelessly for the Wisemen club. Although they had no children, they spent much of their time ‘parenting’ nephews and nieces. A highlight of their year was hosting the family Thanksgiving dinner at their cottage. Mabel was keenly interested in her family history, as well as local (Port Howe) history. She collected and treasured her china dishes. Through the years Mabel worked at various jobs beginning with working for the war effort welding manifolds for the engines of the Anson bombers in Amherst and Ontario. While in Ontario she contracted TB and lived with the effects of this through life. Later she did bookkeeping and at one time taught bookkeeping at night school. She will be dearly missed by all who knew her.
