Lorne J. Dergousoff
February 12, 1926 – November 18, 2018

With love and great sadness, the family of the late Lorne J. Dergousoff, announces the passing of their beloved husband, brother, father, grandfather and great-grandfather at the Canora Gateway Lodge on November 18, 2018. Lorne was born February 12, 1926 to John E. E. and Nettie (Zbeetnoff) Dergousoff on their farm near Canora, Sk. He attended Phoenix school, a one room schoolhouse nearby. He began farming with his father while still in school and together they ran a very successful mixed farming operation. On October 9, 1949, he married Anne Kanygin of Kylemore, Sk. They resided on the family farm with his parents and jointly farmed until he took over the farm in 1960 shortly before his parents moved to Canora. He continued to farm almost to the end of his days as farming was his life’s passion. His farming experience began with horse-drawn equipment, in the days of stooking, threshing machines and crews. His life-long fascination with machinery and things mechanical was solidified with the arrival of steam-powered tractors. This fascination grew when John Deere tractors arrived on the scene. He collected John Deere tractors and his passion for these tractors remained to his final days. Over the years, he participated in old-time harvest shows where his experience and expertise in operating vintage machinery was often sought out. He loved to work with metal and used his forging and welding skills to create or modify parts to repair his own and many neighbours’ machinery. He was very self-sufficient and proud of it! For over 30 years, Lorne maintained the culverts and provided the much-needed beaver dam control for the RM of Keys. Lorne cared about his friends, neighbours and passing strangers and was always willing to lend a hand when needed, whether that be a tow out of a ditch or snowbank, filling up some gas, fixing a car or machinery or providing a lift to the hospital in town. He was an avid hunter and trapper since his youth and in his earlier days he travelled into northern Saskatchewan on annual hunting trips with other hunters. Not only did he provide a source of food, but he used the horns and antlers to create works of art. He embraced nature and had a deep respect and understanding of animals. Throughout his life, he rescued and trained many animals and had a special love for all his dogs. Lorne was also a captivating storyteller. He entertained family, friends and many others with his stories, jokes and sense of humour. Lorne was dedicated to his faith and Russian heritage. He was an active member of the Canora Doukhobor choir and Canora Doukhobor society volunteering in various capacities including officiating at funerals and supporting initiatives at the Heritage Village in Veregin. Music was always a big part of his life. He learned to play guitar, violin and accordion and he loved to sing. From a very young age, he was in popular demand to entertain at many social gatherings and neighbourhood parties. He was a very social person and always enjoyed entertaining and being

entertained. He especially liked country and folk music and took great pleasure in supporting and promoting talented local artists. Lorne met Anne through their shared love of singing, music and dancing. They were both active in the choir and sang together at home and with their family and friends, leaving lasting memories. Lorne and Anne had four children, Elaine in 1953, Vivian in 1955, Jean in 1959 and John in 1964. Lorne is predeceased by his parents, John E. E. and Nettie; his sister Pauline and brother-in-law Mike Sukorokoff; and brother-in-law Alex Strelioff. He is survived by his wife, Anne; his daughters Elaine (Lawrence Kalmakoff) Ottawa; Vivian Dergousoff (Norbert Hache) Ottawa; Jean (Laurence Stanbury) Saskatoon; son John Dergousoff of Saskatoon; his grandchildren Sheena (Mike Bond) Ottawa; Allison (Tim Yaschuk) Nipawin; April (Jason Brown) Saskatoon; great grandchildren Miles & Avery Yaschuk and Teegan Brown; his sister Mary Strelioff of Canora; nieces, nephews and extended family and friends. They also thank Shannon and Shawna of Leson’s Funeral Home for all their guidance, support and patience during this difficult time. In Lorne’s honour, a Funeral Service will be held at 1:00 pm on Friday, November 30, 2018, from the Chapel of Leson’s Funeral Home, Canora, with Walter Ostoforoff of the Canora Doukhobor Society officiating.
