Obituary of JUNE ELIZABETH GEORGE
JUNE ELIZABETH GEORGE
(NEE PRICE)
June passed away on Sunday, July 1, 2018 after a short illness. June was born on May 8, 1926 in Winnipeg, Manitoba. She is survived by her sons, Bill and wife Karen of Winnipeg, David and wife Andree of Calgary, Ralph and wife Meg of Winnipeg, her daughter in law, Judy, wife of her late son Alan, of Regina, grandchildren, Derek, Andrew, Lianne, Vanessa, Michael, Andrea, Nicole, Ryan, Stephanie, Leigh, Thomas and Lucas, ten great grandchildren, her sister Mildred Lis, and her niece Linda (Dexter) Boyd. Her husband Henry Leigh George predeceased her.
June was born to Irish parents who immigrated to Winnipeg during the famine. They were hard workers who eventually owned a hatchery where much of the family worked. She was blessed with “the gift of the gab” and loved talking to anyone at anytime. She told the story of kissing the Blarney Stone on a trip to Ireland, and said it didn’t make a difference!
June married Henry Leigh George on July 3, 1948. Leigh was a banker, and the early years of the marriage included 5 moves between Saskatchewan and Manitoba in 10 years. Her 4 sons were born in different locations during this time. Bill was born in Regina, David in Davidson, Ralph in Dauphin and Alan in Winnipeg. Eventually the family settled permanently in Winnipeg on Richardson where they made lifelong friends.
June’s family was very important to her. She was a baker and would always have chocolate chip cookies available up in the cupboard in a special glass jar. She would often host family events and delighted in having a beautiful meal on the table. She was able to prepare the exact amount of food needed, which probably led to the family motto of “the George’s haven’t eaten until it’s all gone!” Every summer in August, she would head to Clear Lake to the family cottage with the boys for the month.
Once they retired, June and Leigh enjoyed travelling. They visited many parts of Canada and the United States pulling their Boler trailer. They travelled to many places including Europe, and Great Britain, Ireland, Australia, Hawaii, and the Cook Islands. June also visited New Zealand with her grand daughter Lianne.
The funeral service is set for Thursday, July 12th at 2:30 pm at Saint Francis Anglican Church, 253 Burrin Avenue, Winnipeg, Manitoba. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the Alzheimer’s Society.
