Obituary of Judith (Chiasson) MacLeod
It is with immense sadness that we, the family, announce Judy’s passing on Saturday morning, September 8, 2018 at the An Cala Palliative Care Unit of the Cape Breton Regional Hospital. She passed peacefully, surrounded by her loving family. Judy fought valiantly for more than two years against an aggressive uterine cancer. Predeceased by her parents, George and Winnie (Fewer) Chiasson, she spent her early childhood on Harold Street in Sydney, attending St. Joseph’s School, maintaining many friendships from those early years. Also predeceased by her grandparents, a number of uncles, aunts, and cousins, on both sides of her family, she was well-loved by all. With her parents and brother, Judy later moved to Marion Bridge, where she worked at the Marion Bridge Shopping Center, owned for many years by her parents. She had many good friends from the Marion Bridge area, as well as from her High School days at Riverview Rural High. Judy graduated from NSIT in Halifax and earned her Registered Medical Laboratory Technologist designation, working the early part of her career at Sydney City Hospital. When her children were young, she stayed at home, loving and nurturing them to become the wonderful people they are. An entrepreneurial person, Judy sold cosmetics, created and sold crafts, and even sold payphones with her brother for a short time. Judy did survey and census work for Statistics Canada. Later in life, Judy retrained herself in microbiology and returned to work in the laboratory of the Cape Breton Regional Hospital. Intelligent, organized, and dedicated, she would go the extra mile at work, making sure things were correct and complete. She always knew there was a patient and their family anxiously awaiting the results of her work. She made many good friends at the lab, and was very supportive of her colleagues. Judy volunteered for the IWK Telethon, Gowrie Home and School, and Beavers, along with church and community events. She loved to hike, camp (especially in Dunvegan), sew to give her creations to others, and exercise with her gym and coffee buddies. Judy was happiest when surrounded by family and friends who were enjoying themselves and her cooking. She was especially proud of her Newfoundland roots through the Fewer family, and took great pleasure in her Acadian heritage when surrounded by the joie de vivre of the Chiassons. She leaves behind her devoted husband, Donald; her adoring daughter, Sherri Lynn and partner Jeremy Binns; her pride and joy, granddaughter, Elsie Judith; her loving son, Liam and wife Divya Haase MacLeod, and their soon to be born child. Judy is survived by her brother, Albert (Al) and wife Christeen; her two nephews, Steven (Rachael) and David (Karolyn), and their mother, Rebecca. Four very special people in Judy’s life were Donald’s sister, Betty and her husband Kenny Rankin, and Donald’s brother, Bucky and his wife Leann. They will miss her dearly. She will also be missed by her many cousins, especially her sister-like cousin, Margie Alteen and husband Michael; her aunt, Eileen Cook, and her uncles, Murray and Donnie Fewer. Cremation has taken place. Visitation for Judy will be held tomorrow (Tuesday) from 6 to 9 p.m. in Curry’s Funeral Home 775 Main St., Glace Bay (849-7617). Her funeral service will be celebrated Wednesday at 2 p.m. in St. Mary’s Church, Port Morien with Father Norman MacPhee officiating. Burial in Black Brook Cemetery will be followed immediately by a reception at the Port Morien Royal Canadian Legion, to which all are cordially invited to attend. Family flowers only. Donations in Judy’s memory are suggested to the Hospice Palliative Care Society of Cape Breton County or to your charity of choice. Online condolences may be offered at www.currysfuneralhome.ca. Doing a good turn for somebody would be the greatest gift of recognition that you could make for Judy.
