John O. Mosley
1920-2018
It is with deep sadness that we announce
the peaceful passing of John Oswald
Mosley, age 97, of Tyndal Road, Amherst, NS.
John passed away, on Saturday, May 26, 2018, surrounded by his loving
family.
Born in Tidnish, NS, he was a son of the
late Charles and Dorothy (Lynforth) Mosley.
During World War II, John worked at
Canada Car in Amherst, then worked for Charlie George for several
years, then with DOT Road Transport Inspector with the Province of
NS.
John owned and operated a small
farm. He loved his animals, cultivating and harvesting the
crops as recent as last fall. Gardening was a passion and he
always had apples and vegetables for all family and friends that
enjoyed them. John loved dancing, and everyone knew him for
his ability to dance; when tap dancing, waltzing or the 2-step and any
others he was in his element; old time music just made his feet go; he
went for miles to attend any old-time dances
John loved people, social events and
always enjoyed a cup of tea with family and friends. He
rarely missed a day of visiting or doing things with his one brother
and 2 sisters before their passing. John and his wife, Ruth,
took their 4 children camping and on many trips around Atlantic
Canada, over the years as a family. John’s logging
and sawmill operation on the family homestead was quite something to
be seen in action. John was mechanically inclined and could
fix anything. John built Mosley’s Pond,
approximately 1958, which is a 60-acre inland lake, becoming the most
diverse inland provincial lake in NS. It was used as the base line for
many years by the province to gauge other inland lakes. Producing his
own electricity from gas-powered lighting plants and hydraulic ram
pumps to a little-giant turbine, overshot water wheels, and cross-flow
turbine before getting on the grid in 1989. When the electricity
finally came through, John, appeared on national TV on the Midday
Report and the National News as well as the Year-end Review as one of
the Canada’s positive events of the year.
Mosley’s Pond is and has been listed on Google maps and
other places now for years.
John’s family lived off grid
for years therefore, he and family loved to hunt and fish whenever
they could. Nature and backwoods living was part of his
daily life, valuing people, land, animals, and most of all his
family.
He will be dearly missed by his loving
wife of 58 years, Ruth (Godfrey) Mosley; children David
(Christina/Troy), Michael (Connie), Gail (Dwight), Reg (Lorie), all of
Amherst; grandchildren Erika Sonier Benjamin (Corey), Katharina Mosley
(Amanda), Markus Mosley, Kirkland Tuttle, Abba-Gayle Mosley, Elexa
Mosley; great granddaughter Emelia Benjamin; as well as several nieces
and nephews.
He was predeceased by his brother Thomas
“Tickey” Mosley; sisters Ellen Raddin and Connie
Helm.
Arrangements have been entrusted to
Furlong~Jones Funeral Home, 70 Church
St., Amherst, NS (902-667-8777) where an Afternoon of Remembrance will
be held on Tuesday, May 29, 2018 from 2 to 4 pm. There will
be no funeral service. Burial will take place in Riverside
Cemetery, Tidnish immediately following.
