John James McCabe October 20 2018

Passed peacefully away after a short illness, October 20, 2018, aged 92. Pre-deceased by his beloved wife Dorothy (Chafe); parents James & May (Peddle); step-mother Jessie Snow; and brothers George & Willis. Leaving to mourn, his devoted daughter Dulcie and son-in-law Alex Coombs; grandchildren Deborah & Darryl (Joan); grandsons Nicholas, Andrew, Connor & Michael; and a large circle of friends and family. John lived a long and full life. He lived independently in his own home right until this illness. At 92 he was still cutting his own wood and only just gave up driving. Originally from Harbour Grace, he and Dot made their home and raised their daughter in St. John’s. John fished on the Labrador at age 12, lied about his age and joined the army at age 14, was stationed at Bell Island during the German attacks of WWII. He farmed, worked the lumber woods, drove a taxi, and then a bus. He worked hard and rarely stood still. He and Dot grew their own vegetables for years, and the root cellar was always full. John was skilled with both hand and power tools, as well as heavy equipment. He was happiest when he was building or fixing something. John loved his family most of all, and he will be sorely missed. Visitation at Carnells Funeral Home, 329 Freshwater Rd., on Tuesday October 23 from 2-4 & 7-9. Funeral service from the Carnell Memorial Chapel on October 24 at 2pm with reception to follow. Interment will take place at the Anglican Cemetery, Kenmount Road. In lieu of flowers, the family requests a donation to the charity of your choice.
