Obituary for
Janet Eveline Taylor (MacGillivray)
Surrounded by family and friends, after a long fight with cancer, Janet passed away at home on Friday, November 23, 2018. She was the beloved wife of Edward (Ned), loving mother to Shannon (Reg Higham) and Scott, adoring grandmother to Tristan, loving sister to Marion Johnstone (Donald) and Nora-Jean Jardine (Paul), loving aunt to Carolyn Mason (Bill), Lori MacDougall (Joey) and Kirk Johnstone, and great-aunt to Layton and Allister Mason and Morgan and Kayla MacDougall. Janet was pre-deceased by her parents, D. MacKay MacGillivray and Alice Hogan MacGillivray.
Janet was born in Halifax and always held a special place in her heart for all things Nova Scotian, not least, her bagpipes. She was an adventurer in spirit and practice. She got great pleasure from traveling and connecting with people wherever she went. An avowed extrovert, she loved spending time with family and friends … the more the merrier. In the past few years Janet found joy in photography and had an exceptional eye for creating affecting images. She was determined to get the most out of life until the end. That was our Janet!
The family would like to thank her medical team. Janet was very grateful for their kindness and care during her illness. Special thanks to Dr. Paul Wheatley-Price and Dr. Scott Morgan.
Respects may be paid at the West Chapel of Hulse, Playfair & McGarry, 150 Woodroffe Avenue (at Byron), Ottawa, on Thursday, November 29, from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. The funeral service will be at 1:00 p m., Friday, November 30 at Parkdale United Church, 429 Parkdale Ave, followed by a reception.

Death notice for the town of: Ottawa, Province: Ontario
Ned and family:
I am so sorry to hear of Janet’s passing. I see Marion occasionally so I knew that Janet was ill.
Janet was a founding member of the Ceilidh girls in New Glasgow, the first all girl Pipe band in North America. I was a drummer and a founding member as well. I met Shannon when she accompanied her mother to our 50th anniversary. Next summer we will celebrate 70 years since our beginning – Janet will be in our thoughts. Janet is the first person who passed away of the original 16 who formed the band.
Please accept my sincere sympathies.
Pat MacKay
My sincere sympathy to Janet’s family. She was an excellent piper and preceded me as a member of the Ceilidh Girls’ Pipe Band. She will be remembered fondly.
