James Russell Geddes (Jim) was born to Eldon and Jean (Banks) March 29, 1944 and died at his Lake Charles home June 5, 2018 in the presence and care of his wife Dianne of 49 years and his sons Bradley and Robert. He was proud of, and loved his sons, whom equally loved their Dad.
Besides his wife and two sons, Jim is survived by his brother Gary (Patty).
He is also survived by his Brothers- in- Law Wendell (Dorcas), and Kirby, Sisters- in- Law Karen and Lisa and six nieces. Besides his parents he was predeceased by an infant son Christian Olen Geddes
During his 47 year career, he was employed with two Canadian Banks, followed by 34 years in Real Estate sales. After retiring he enjoyed developing, writing and teaching a course for the NS Real Estate Board. In his youth and while attending Dal, he took a sabbatical from his education to work on the supply ships to the north and as a mine surveyor in northern Manitoba.
In his youth, Jim participated in many sports including paddling (with Mic Mac A.A.C.), hockey, football and basketball and in latter years he enjoyed the sports as a spectator.
Jim lived a full and rich life, enjoying relationships with family and friends who loved him. Volunteering and participating in countless activities that enriched his heart, mind and soul. The relationships he developed with the many people he encountered as he served his church and community helped him to discern the very reason he was born.
In many ways Jim was naïve, very young at heart and a “social butterfly”. He had a complex and unique sense of humour that could sometimes get him into a little trouble. An eternal optimist, he would look for and find the positive in every life situation. This was especially true when he encountered and faced several serious health issues including the last one that he could not overcome.
Jim loved Celtic music and attended the Celtic Colours International Music Festival almost every year of its tenure. He would invite anyone to attend with him including several years with wife Dianne, his special Uncle Russell and sometimes with friends and cousins. And oh, how he loved the fall scenery on the west side of Cape Breton Island. On his last visit in 2017, he said it was a spiritual experience for him, being in nature in the fall in the Margaree Valley.
Serving in Rotary Club for 25 years, working on many projects and holding many Executive positions, he once said that one of his most rewarding experiences with the club was the elementary school “Read Along Program” where he could be silly and animated and show his inner child to a captive audience while reading a story to the school children.
He loved and cherished his church family at Port Wallis United. He served on the Stewards, the Trustees and several other committees. He attended Tuesday night Discussion Group, sang in the Choir with his friends, helped co-write parts of plays and acted in many character roles along side his cast member friends in the annual Dinner Theatre at Port Wallis United Church.
A celebration of Jim’s life will be held on Saturday, June 9 2018 at 2:00 p.m. at Port Wallis United, 263 Waverley Road, Dartmouth, officiated by his Minister and friend, Rev Ivan Gregan. A reception will follow in the church hall.
