Jacqueline Dale

Dale, Jacqueline, of Dartmouth passed away October 8th, 2018, at the Dartmouth General Hospital. Born in May 1932, she was the daughter of Donald and Elizabeth (nee Wallin) Denham. Mum went to Dartmouth High School and left after Grade 11 with a full scholarship in hand to attend Mt. Allison University and then Dalhousie/Kings College to complete a Bachelor of Science Degree in 1952. Mum began her career with the Fisheries Research Board of Canada in Halifax as Chief Technician/ Chemist. She left after several years to have her family, eventually returning to what had become Fisheries and Oceans Canada and their labs at the Bedford Institute of Oceanography (BIO). Here, she worked in several different capacities, first as a research assistant and later, after earning her MBA from St. Mary’s University in 1986, as Assistant to the Director of the Marine Ecology Lab and a Planning Analyst. She loved her work and those she worked with, whether in the lab, on a research vessel, on the mud flats of the Bay of Fundy, or while volunteering to help coordinate one of the Institute’s many events and activities. Some of these included BIO Christmas Variety Shows, the A.G. Huntsman Award ceremonies, and many BIO Open Houses, earning her a reputation for collaboration, getting things done, and having fun while doing it. Mum continued to be involved with BIO after she retired in 1991, coordinating conferences such as Coastal Zone Canada, working in the gift shop, and as a founding member of the BIO-Oceans Association. In 2005 Mum was recognized for her life-long contributions, unselfish dedication, and community spirit when she was the first female presented with the Beluga Award from the BIO-Oceans Association. This was a great honour and just one of the many times her family was so very proud of her. Mum had a zest for life that was magical. She was always ready for an adventure and had an amazing love for her family which we all felt to our core. Mum was an avid traveller who ventured through North America (including the Canadian Arctic) as well as Europe, Asia, South America, Australia, Africa, New Zealand and the South Pacific. She instilled this passion for travel in her three daughters, and in turn, all her grandchildren. We all had the opportunity to travel with her at some point as we accompanied her on local trips around the Maritimes as well as taking a few cruises, touring the Rocky Mountains by train, backpacking through Fiji and Samoa and venturing out on an African Safari. Mum was great fun to travel with as she was pretty much up for anything (even bungee jumping in New Zealand when she was 63). These memories will always be precious to each of us. Mum was also a great friend to many over the years. She believed strongly in friendship and held her friends close to her heart. Mum would do anything for her friends and was always there for them. Mum was active in the community and with her friends. As a young mother she was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star and the IWK Auxiliary. Later in life she took on a key role as Fundraising Chair for the Helen Creighton Folklore Festival, belonged to the Dartmouth Strutters Dance Club, enjoyed skating, cross-country skiing, going to the gym, and walking around Lake Banook on a regular basis. She loved to do word puzzles and belonged to a book club which she cherished. It was also very hard for Mum to pass a yard sale without stopping. Jackie is survived by three daughters Carla Dale (Sean McDermott), Karen Dale (Cameron MacLennan) and Tina Dale (Graham MacDonald); six wonderful grandchildren she loved with every bit of her soul, Casey (Alex), Jessica (Rory), Patrick (Olivia), Alex, Anna and Rachel; niece Marilyn Brownell (Glen); and nephew, Donald MacKenzie. Jackie was predeceased by her parents; two sisters, Doris Denham and Vivian MacKenzie; and brother-in law, Lloyd MacKenzie. We would like to acknowledge the love and special affection given to our Mum by Donna Rutledge and Mary Surrette, as well as the care of the staff of Lewis Hall, Glasgow Hall, and the amazing staff of 3rd Floor East at the Dartmouth General Hospital. Funeral Service will be held Friday, October 12th at 11:00 a.m. at Mattatall’s Funeral Home, 217 Portland St., Dartmouth, with a reception to follow. There will be a private family burial.
