HERBERT WILBURN JOHNSTON
March 30, 1934 – November 27, 2018
Bill passed away after a long struggle with Alzheimer’s disease. Predeceased by his wife, Cathy, in 2010 after 55 years of marriage, Bill leaves his daughters, Joan Johnston and Jaye Pelton (Doug) and his grandchildren, Ryan Geddert and Michaela Pelton.
Bill was born in Saskatchewan and came to Victoria as a young man. He spent many years in Victoria and later relocated his family to Maple Ridge. A few years after that, he and Cathy moved to Nanaimo where they lived for almost 30 years. After Cathy’s passing, Bill returned to Victoria.
Bill had a varied career. He worked for Labatt’s Breweries in Victoria and in New Westminster. He worked in Industrial Relations and Human Resources in Vancouver, and moved to Nanaimo as the Human Resources Director for the Vancouver Island Regional Library. Bill spent many years in the Canadian Scottish Regiment (Princess Mary’s) in Victoria, and in later years joined the Regimental Association in Nanaimo. He was also a Regimental Trustee for the Canadian Scottish in Victoria.
Bill often expressed gratitude for the way his life had turned out. He felt rich in the love of family and friends. He could often be found reading, glass of scotch at his side. He kept up with current events and was always ready for a good political discussion.
Bill was a person of integrity. He always tried to choose the right thing rather than the easy thing. If he said he would do something, he did it. He had a great sense of fair play. Although he lost a lot to Alzheimer’s, Bill’s gentle nature and impeccable manners remained with him to the very end.
Bill’s daughters want to thank the staff of The Heights at Mt. View, where Bill lived, for the extraordinary care they gave him. We are grateful he was able to spend his final months in such a comfortable and loving environment.
