Helen Walsh RN 19362018

Helen M. Walsh RN
1936-2018
Helen Walsh of Fredericton, passed away peacefully on June
24th, 2018 in the ICU of the DECH in Fredericton, NB.
Helen was born on October 29th, 1936 in Twillingate, NL. She
was the first born daughter of the late Frank and Nellie
Pardy.
Helen graduated from St. John’s General Hospital in
St. John’s, NL in 1958 to become a Registered Nurse. Helen
met the love of her life Herb Walsh while he was studying Engineering
at Memorial University during the same time. This was not their first
meeting, when Herb’s dad was a teacher in Twillingate, NL in
the mid 1940’s, Herb fondly recalls seeing Helen in
pigtails, swinging on a gate.
Herb and Helen were married in 1960, and Herb did not do so
well in University in his third year so they moved to Springdale, NL.
In Springdale Herb worked as a surveyor at a copper mine, while Helen
worked at the local hospital.
Being the strong convincing nurse and woman that Helen was,
she supported and encouraged Herb to return to university to complete
his Engineering degree. They went on a honeymoon trip to the northeast
of the U.S. and passed through Fredericton, NB, where Herb attended
UNB and finished “OUR” degree. During the UNB days Helen
worked as a registered nurse at the Polio Clinic in
Fredericton.
Following Herb’s graduation, the couple moved to
Cleveland and then Toronto and Helen, the very compassionate and
dedicated, hardworking and loving nurse, continued in her profession
where ever they lived.
Their love of Fredericton never faded, so when Herb was
offered a position at Neill and Gunter Ltd. in 1968 they moved back to
Fredericton. Over the next 30 years Helen worked for several doctors
and ultimately was one of the most dedicated nurses who provided
health care to the UNB students at the Students Health Clinic on the
UNB campus until retirement in 1998. During her career she served with
many community health service groups: The Heart and Stroke Foundation,
The United Way and for many years on the Fredericton Kidney Foundation
Board.
Helen is survived by her loving husband of 58 years, her
sister Kathleen Waterman of Twillingate, NL, her sister Elizabeth
Chalker (Richard) of Avondale, NL, her loving little Yorkshire Terrier
“Libby”, her brother-in-law David Walsh (Phyllis) and
sisters-in-law Marie Walsh-Dawson (Kevin), Vanessa Walsh and Goldie
Walsh, and many nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by her parents, brothers-in-law, Bryce
and Brian Walsh and a nephew Jimmy Chalker.
Visitation will be held at McAdam’s Funeral Home,
Fredericton, NB on Wednesday, June 27, 2018 from 1 – 4
pm. A memorial service will be held later in the summer and
will be announced at that time. For those who
wish, memorial tributes in Helen’s honor may be made to the
Kidney Foundation, the Dr. Everett Chalmers Regional Hospital
Foundation or to a charity of the donor’s choice.
