Grace “Louise” Vitale (Meadows)
February 10, 1927 – June 14, 2018
Lou Vitale of Dartmouth, N.S. passed away peacefully with family by her side on Thursday June 14 at Dartmouth General Hospital. She was born in Montreal, QC to the late William and Catherine Meadows. She married the love of her life, the late Carl Vitale, in 1945. When she lost him on February 25, 2018 she lost a part of herself, but the love of her family carried her through her loss and her own illness. For 72 years they shared a life that was devoted to family and adventure. They moved from Montreal to Toronto in 1958. Lou worked as a housekeeper and cook at St. Bonaventure’s Rectory in Don Mills, Ontario. Her Franciscan priest friends were blessed with her nurturing care, energy and love. Throughout the years Lou was an unbelievable cook who had a big heart. This meant that there was never a limit to how many guests could pass through her kitchen,be it at their home or their Wolf Lake, Ontario cottage. Lou’s welcome was always warm and inviting and her cooking was hard to compete with. Her #1 rule was use real butter! Lou was also a talented seamstress, quilter, and knitter and her family has many treasured pieces that were made with love by Nana. From comfy hand knit socks, to sweaters and hats, she always had something going on needles. She had style! Another passion of Lou’s was traveling! Her and Carl traveled to many Caribbean destinations, and once Carl retired they began 27 years of winters in Florida. They had so many wonderful friends along the way in many different places! Lou’s favorite destination was to visit her grandchildren! Whether it was Quebec, Alberta, Illinois, Nova Scotia, or New Hampshire, her and Carl would hit the road early and be on their way! Lou was like a human GPS – she studied road maps and prepared her routes and had an amazing sense of direction! Don’t even try to get her to use an automated navigation system – she had no use for them! Lou did everything with passion! For many years she enjoyed golfing, exercising and swimming. In 2011 Lou and Carl moved to Dartmouth, NS from Ontario and were blessed with new friendships and good times.
Lou loved her family unconditionally and was a blessed example of a wife, mother, Nana and friend. She felt abundantly blessed herself and had a devoted faith. She is survived by her children Dan, Jeff (Cathy) and Maria Lennon (Paul), as well as six grandchildren, all who loved their Nana so dearly: Paul, Jeremy, Michael (Kara), Matthew, Ben, and Sarah, and one great grandchild, Siena.
The family wishes to extend a special thank you to the Palliative Care staff at Dartmouth General Hospital who did their job with love and tender care.
Donations in Louise’s memory may be made to Dartmouth General Hospital.
Come unto me, all ye that labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Matthew 11:28
